A little hard for me to read the less-than-King's English writing.
Birthdays for the Dead is a very dark and gritty book that keeps you on the edge-of-your-seat. It has all the ingredients you need for a thriller: murder, mystery, violence, good and bad guys, vengeance, justice and a surprise ending. Abduction of twelve year-old girls is a disturbing subject so the book does not have the humor of the Logan MacRae series. I did, however, enjoy the interaction between DC Ash Henderson and profiler, Alice McDonald. I found all the characters to be interesting and the unique plot kept me guessing all the way through. This chilling story will stay with you even after you finish the book. I now look forward to reading the second book of the series. I highly recommend this book to those who like mystery thrillers. Warning: not for the faint of heart.
The UK crime thrillers differ from the American ones (at least to me) in that there are more tangents about the characters' lives and problems. As such, this started out slow, but the ending was a real banger. Gritty and full of dark humor.
Really wanted to like this book and this author but alas can't give it more than 2 1/2.
The main character is an awful person and his sidekick psychologist is just a joke.
This was very slow and there are other storylines within the story and it gets messy trying to keep track of everything and everyone. At the halfway point I had to skip and skim and get to the 'who' and then I wasn't satisfied with this book.
You have to remember it is from the UK and he is a Scottish author so a lot of the language and phases are unfamiliar and makes it very hard and tedious to read.
