This was an incredible book - I loved every moment of it. It caught my attention right in the beginning with the description of Elena's run. It got even better when Elena went back to the Pack. The tension between her and Clay was absolutely intense. But the descriptions are really what caught my attention. Armstrong seems to really know how it feels to be a wolf - or at least how to describe it so it seems that way!

What a great beginning to a series I am looking forward to following. A wonderfully strong and intelligent female lead who, of course, is surrounded by good looking men, but, unlike a certain vampire series (LKH, pay attention!), she doesn't feel the need to be the only brain nor is she boffing everyone in the cast. I am picking up the second book, "Stolen", as soon as I click, "Save Review"...

Elena Michaels seems like the typical strong and sexy modern woman. She lives with her architect boyfriend, writes for a popular newspaper, and works out at the gym.She is also a werewolf.

Elena has done all she can to assimilate the human world, but the man whose bite changed her existence forever, and his legacy, continue to haunt her. Thrown into a desperate war for survival that tests her allegiance to a secret clan of werewolves, Elena must reckon with who and what she is in this passionate, page turning novel!!!

Excellent book!!!!

Elena is trying to blend in as a human, but it's getting difficult to keep disappearing at night to change and hunt. It's also hard, as well as un-healthy, to conceal her hunger. She's a werewolf who has left her pack after not being able to forgive her ex Clay for biting her without her consent, thus turning her into a werewolf. Even though she has been away for awhile she still can't suppress her feelings for him. This makes it hard for Elena to commit to her current human lover. When Elena is called home by her old pack leader, Jeremy, to help solve crimes involving "mutts" (werewolves not a part of the pack), she reluctantly agrees and becomes the animal that she has tried for so long to keep at bay. Also, returning home means returning to a life filled with Clay and pack laws.

I know I'm really late on this series, but here it goes anyway. I really, really, REALLY enjoyed these characters. Elena is strong, but she has her weaknesses and a major one is Clay. Who only has eyes for Elena and will never move on. There are some really sweet scenes between these two, and some really steamy scenes. I liked the idea of the werewolves working within the Pack, following Pack laws, and those who weren't a part of the Pack are "mutts". Sometimes the plot was predictable, BUT that doesn't make it any less enjoyable. The protagonists are easy to cheer for, and the antagonists are very easy to hate.

If you haven't started this series, definitely start from the beginning. Also, Kelley Armstrong has a TON of short stories on her website that can be read starting before Bitten, and in between the printed books in the series, so be sure you read those too.

I'm a big fan of werewolf stories and this one with it's pack dynamics, the relationship entanglements, the gore . . had me anxiously turning the pages. But, being the honest sort that I am, must say that I didn't particularly like either main character all that much. Elena, the only female werewolf in existance as we're told time and again or Clay, the super alpha wolf with the Chippendales looks. Elena despises Clay (but loves him too) and only wants to live a normal "human" existence. Clay, born and raised a werewolf, can't figure her out. He wants her, she wants him, so what's the problem? Well, for startes, Elena LIVES with another man whom she claims to love yet diddles with Clay when she's in his turf. Elena is so wishy-washy about this it continually annoyed me.

Character flaws aside, I enjoyed this book more than many I've read this year. I'd read more books about these wolves as they're much more engaging (IMO, of course) than the "Magic" books written by the same author.

This is the best werewolf book I've ever read. I picked it up on a whim from the library and read it in one day. Then went back and read it again. I loved it so much I had to buy it as soon as I spotted it in my local Borders. It's my favorite book with rich descriptions of the change from human to werewolf and all the senses. If you love the paranormal genre, you must read this book!

I have to say that I really enjoyed this book. Elena was such a riveting character. It's rare that I find a book where I am so drawn in to their personality, that I feel the same emotions as that character. She was strong, witty, and loyal. Throughout the story, she struggled with her dual desires: to live a human life and to fully embrace her werewolf life. I liked her interactions with the others, especially Clay. He was driven to keep her with the Pack, but seemed to learn from his previous mistakes by taking a different approach with her. There were many suspenseful moments as well that was surprisingly pleasant. The outcome to her wants and the danger that the Pack faced was believable and realistic. This was a nice start to this series.

This was the 1st in a series that I started, based on a recommendation from another PBS reader who liked another series (The Carpathians) that I liked. Anyway, she suggested this one so I gave this 1st book a try. I wasn't too sure at first who I was rooting for. Sweet, kind, wouldn't-hurt-a-fly Paul, or crazy, dark, dominant Clay. The only downside to the book was that she hurt Paul, which I'm never a fan of. Other than that, I loved the down-to-earth writing. It was modern, sexy, thrilling and super fun to read! As soon as I finished it, I wish-listed the other 9 books in the series.

Kelley Armstrong tells the story of the only known female werewolf who has to come to grips with her past, her dreams for the future and choosing between 2 men. Not ever having read a book specifically about werewolves, I was a bit hesitant. I was not disappointed. Passionately written, this is a story that will leave you satisfied yet still wanting for more. The story of Elena and Clay is volatile as well as tender. The werewolves are depicted as private, family oriented and loyal. Plenty of passion, but not porn. You can't help but love Elena, who is not your typical female. She is tough, strong and witty. A beautiful story!
ashleyhoffenberg avatar reviewed Bitten (Women of the Otherworld, Bk 1) on + 25 more book reviews
This was my first taste of Kelley Armstrong and I must say, I was impressed. While I wasn't very connected to the characters in the beginning (that changed, don't worry!), I was really enjoying the plot, the history of the werewolves, and the writing style.

Elena was a really great narrator. She had me laughing, sniffling, and screaming at her for her stupidity at times. She is a strong female who doesn't want to accept the supernatural side of herself, and has tried to run from it. Her strong-willed personality is what I love about her most.

I adored Clay from his first scene, and suddenly became very engaged in the history between he and Elena when Clay had to "protect" Elena in Toronto. Clay is the adopted son of Jeremy, the Pack's leader. While his hot temper and violent tendencies made him seem more wolf than man, at times, he is over the top for Elena and you can feel his devotion leak off the pages.

Good action, good lovin', good characters and good writing

Being the only female werewolf in the world has its drawbacks. Elena Michaels just wants to fit into the human world. A call from her pack Alpha makes Elena return home. There are several non-pack wolves (mutts) in the area who have killed humans and left the bodies on pack property. Something needs to be done. While trying to balance her life between the human world and the werewolf world, Elena must also put up with her ex-lover, Clay...the wolf who bit her.

Wow! Unique debut novel. The first 50 pages are a little slow, but don't let that put you off. The story suddenly kicks into high gear and never lets up. I highly recommend this book. My rating: 5 Stars.

A disappointing and hard read. The author's attempt to portray the heroine as a strong woman only came across as an unlikable self righteous, bratty bitch. It was a fairly straightforward simple plot, no twists, turns or surprises, you knew who the bad guys were and that was about it. Various characters show up and are killed before you even have a chance to care. Others were fairly one note and very bland by the time their turn comes around you still don't care. I had to force myself to finish and it couldn't happen soon enough, lots of pages wasted on uninteresting boring information that leads nowhere most times. The ending picked up a bit but overall, left much to be desired.

There were times that I felt this book was a little boring...like the time that Elena was in the compound however I found that later what felt like way too much dialogue was necessary to build a relationship with the many characters involved in this story. I love that Elena has a conscience but in the end she does what she has to do and doesn't whine about doing it. I can't wait for the next book.

When I started getting into paranormal romance and urban fantasy books, I quickly learned that I had a lot of catching up to do. One of the books that kept coming up in conversations with friends, online reviews and recommendations, every list I looked at, was this book--Bitten by Kelley Armstrong. There were people that told me this was the book to which all other shapeshifter books should be compared. Now, I'm not going to gush quite such high praise, but I will say this is going on my five star shelf (and I don't say that about many books).

The story is told entirely from the first person perspective of Elena. Ten years prior to the main plot, Elena was bitten by her fiance and thrust into a world of werewolves she never dreamed existed. She has done everything in her power to seperate herself from the Pack (the leading clan of werewolves) and make a life for herself in the human world. But when her alpha calls and demands her help with some unruly mutts (non-Pack werewolves) she can't refuse. Thrown back into the violent and unpredictable world of werewolves, Elena must fight those who threaten her loved ones and come to terms with who and what she is.

This book is brilliant in it's simplicity. I guess I've grown accustomed, with most fantasy books, to being inundated with information about vampires, shape-shifters, witches, fairies, and all the customs and rituals and rules that go along with each. It's not that I mind that in the slightest, but sometimes a story that's just about one thing--werewolves in this case--is best. I got a really clear sense, from the brilliant use of Elena's perspective, exactly what it might be like to be a werewolf. Her journey, her pain, her relationship with the other wolves, occupied most of the space and I mean that in the best possible way. I loved the Pack and the disfunctional family atmosphere they create. And the romance between Elena and Clay (the wolf who bit her) is remarkably sweet. Even the villains are fleshed out, with believable and interesting motivations.

What I liked most about this book, at the end of it all, was how thuroughly Elena's worldview shifted. There's nothing quite like watching a character finally come to accept herself. When it's done right, it makes the book spectacular.

If you're looking for a werewolf book, look no further. This one's a keeper.

I came across this novel in the midst of a serious vampire fic binge (which can overlap with werewolf fic), but it stands out as a little bit different from the rest.

First, I don't tend to like werewolf novels, but I liked this. The dog/human dynamics are well-written and include fresh details, while at the same time Armstrong does not feel the need to over-explain how it "works."

Second, this book has a little more "weight" than I expected, or that is typical of the genre. It's a bit more of a mystery than a romance, although romance--and sex--is also included. The last werewolf book I read was "Kitty and the Midnight Hour" by Carrie Vaughn. That book is far more light-weight than this is. I read it quickly, and discarded it easily, and felt vaguely dissatisfied afterward. On the other hand, in "Bitten" the story occasionally seemed to take awhile to get to where it was going, but I was never quite sure where the story would lead, either (a good thing). And there is enough going on in the dynamics and the storyline to stretch the reading over several days.

Finally, the characters are interesting and original. The heroine has suffered--in her past, her relationships, for being what she is--but she is not a damsel in distress. No whiny female protagonist here. No "misunderstood" love interests in need of compassion, either. (Both of these tend to be genre cliches.)

I recommend this book if you're craving a rich werewolf story, but save it for another day if you just want something to toss away after enjoying for an afternoon.

A fast-paced novel about a young female werewolf, who'd rather live like a normal, un-supernatural person, and the happily werewolf-ish man who loves her. Sexual tension (and not just tension), lethal danger and complex family relations galore. The first in the Women of the Otherworld series.
