I have not seen the book but there is a six page essay in Harper's Monthly (April 2021) reviewing it (Darryl Pinckney,
Tongues of Fire, p. 82). Dr. Gates offers an extensive examination, from the meetings conducted by slaves to today. He also considers how many preachers were out of step with the younger people who were surging in the 1960s (and today).
There are Black congregations of many denominations, but "throughout The Black Church Gates is talking about the institution at its best."
