This book is the start of a great new series that easily surpasses the Makers Song Series. Ms. Phoenix, while she continues to write from multiple perspectives in this book, has 1) decreased those perspectives down to a manageable level and 2) brought those perspectives quickly together so that the reader is not left hanging, wondering why the heck you are reading about some minor character who happens to be the maid.
The story is dark, and fascinating. Ms. Phoenix has created a world, a language, and a unique way of being in this book. Magic is a way of life, not needing explanation, it just is. It is hard to explain what is going on in the book because I find myself writing spoilers every time I try. To avoid spoiling the book, I will just tell you the mystery is good and I did not predict the ending, it was quite the twist.
In addition, for those who read the Makers Song Series, there is no glossary in the back.

Black Dust Mambo is the first in the new Hoodoo series by Adrian Phoenix. I got this book because I really enjoy The Maker's Song series by her. I was most definitely not disappointed. Within the first few pages I was wrapped up in Kallie's world and story and can't wait for the next in the series!
Kallie is attending a festival held by the Hecatean Alliance with her best friend Belladonna when things start to go wrong. After waking up and finding a lover of hers more than just dead, Kallie begins an exciting non stop adventure to discover exactly what happened. Along the way she meets new people some of which are nice and want to help her while others would rather she just go away.
I enjoyed getting to know Kallie and the other characters in Black Dust Mambo. The majority of the book is very fast paced and filled with several interesting characters that I look forward to reading more about, especially Belladonna, Layne and McKenna. The ending leaves off with what is sure to be the beginning of the next great book in this amazing new series.

Very interesting book. What I liked: Spending time in the heads of the various characters really helped you get to know them quicker. I also loved Bell, Layne, and Augustine. Id love to see Augustine stick around for the next book, but we will have to see what happens. A little disappointed in Kallie. Shes supposed to be the focus of the book, but we dont spend as much time with her as you would in a typical novel, so I did not get to know her as well and she really did not do much or know much. I assume that will change as the book progresses.
The not so good is the bouncing around among the characters. Was a bit annoying in the beginning. I really did not care for Aunt Gabi and the hoodoo voodoo got very confusing for me at one point. The ending was also very frustrating. A big secret revealed, but only in part.
Overall though, a promising first book with several wonderful characters that could take the series in many different directions.

This is a new author for me and I couldn't put it down! So looking forward to the next one.
This was really good. I enjoyed the characters (each one). There is a lot going on and in a short time frame. I liked the Hoodoo aspect of it, this made it different. A bit of a cliff hanger at the end. Hope there not one in book #2. More!
This was a big 5 for me. I really liked this book. I've read all of the books in her Maker's Song series and really like them but I think I may like this one even better. Her characters are so well done I'd love to see most of them have small series of their own. We really need a series for the Nomads. Can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
I found this to be an enjoyable read and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters and the story were amazing and I can't wait for the next book
I enjoyed this book, but found it a bit of a drag in some places. A lot of details, but interesting.
Really liked this book from the first chapter. I hope it goes on much further than book two.
