This book has an aura similar to "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier (one of my favorites). A good read, not too heavy but engaging and entertaining.

I was not impressed with this Barbara Michaels book. I kept waiting for something to happen, for the book to keep my interest, but it never did. It's an okay story, but it's not what the reader expects.

Megan O'Neill sees it hanging in the sky above the towers of Grayhaven Manor -- a beautiful yet sinister black rainbow, a warning to the estate's new governess to stay away. Yet the warmth and kindness of the Mandeville family banish her fears -- and her hypnotic obsession for her handsome, mysterious new employer blinds her to the darkness within. But desire always has its price. And the shocking secrets enclosed in Grayhaven's walls threaten to pull Megan into the terrifying shadows, never to emerge again.

Gothic-romance-suspense with a especially dandy final twist.
A gripping conflict between past and present, duty and passion and good and evil.
The first time the new governess sees Grayhaven Manor, it is framed by a black rainbow. She was welcomed by the family, but becomes obsessed with her employer, which blinds her to the truth of the house. Good mystery, great storytelling.

This book seemed interesting in the beginning but then it seemed to drag on and on. I'm glad I finally read this so I can move it out of the house and make room for better books.
This is a book about 2 women being oppressed in Victorian times and their friendship and how they overcame it. It's also about the selfishness and elitism of the British aristocracy. It's a very entertaining story also. Barbara Michaels is one of the greatest writers of romantic suspense and also a great advocate of women's rights. Reading her books allows one to learn a lot about history in a way that makes it fascinating, not boring! This is a rather Gothic book in case you are looking for that.
Dynamite gothic, kinda turns things on their heads at the end. My favorite of all the Barbara Michaels titles.
