Freemont and Black migrations to the Midwest and later to the Northwest in an attempt to escape from slavery. Black men founded and built towns, some only to have to move to another community because of the newly created exclusion laws which prohibited the existence of Black settlers. Another avenue of opportunity for Black men in the West was the U.S. Army where, known as the Buffalo Soldiers, they fought in the Indian wars, against rustlers and hold-up men, and later in the Spanish-American war.
Along with text and historical documents are 265 rare photographs of Black frontiersmen, cowboys, settlers, homesteaders, journalists, jockeys, and soldiers -- providing a glimpse of an exciting but rarely known part of American history.« less
