Not a Miss Silver, but our old friends Lamb and Abbott from that series are here. Well-drawn characters and well-crafted mystery.

Another delightful mystery by Patricia Wentworth.
Love Patricia Wentworth! She's's up there with Agatha Christie!
Alas, this is the last Patricia Wentworth novel I have on hand to read. All the others I haven't read are WLed and are hard to come by. I kept trying to figure out who the killer was in this novel to no avail. I had already checked four major characters of my suspect list as they seemed---based on my experience with reading dozens of Wentworth's novels---they didn't fit. When the reveal came I was surprised and remembered---like the characters---you shouldn't always believe what you see.
This is the first book in a short---three novels---series. Two police characters are familiar to readers of Wentworth's "Miss Silver" series. But you didn't have to read those books to engage with these characters.
