This is classic Scarpetta, complimented by her brilliant--and sometimes frustrating risk-taking niece Lucy. Named for the facility founded by eminent forensic anthropoligist William Bass of the University of Tennessee, this is a fascinating glimpse into a real-world facility. Art imitating life. Either way, it's a great read.

So far, this series is getting better with each book as the author progressing in her writing. But, she does need to work on factoid-typos, because in the previous book, her niece was only seventeen. In this one, she's now 21, even though the killer who escaped in the previous book was mentioned as having gone on his spree only 2 years prior. So, either Gault (the killer) went on a 2nd killing spree, or 4 years have actually passed. I wish the author would be consistent, because when a person's reading books back-to-back within a day of each other, things like this get noticed.
As for the drama involving her niece, it's a amazing that a girl who is so smart can be so stupid. It's a little over-dramatic at times, but I suppose it does make for a good side story.
The killer in this one becomes fairly obvious early on, but the fact that they die with Scarpetta in the room is getting redundant for a climactic ending. Especially with the way it's done. The ending just felt rushed, as there was a lot of things happening in a short period of time. The "bad guy" last stand was just a bit too much. The hasty ending makes the reader feel a bit robbed after the rest of the book had been done well and was very interesting.

The name of this novel comes from the University of Tennessee's Decay Research Facility known as the Body Farm. This is a fast moving and complicated story involving scandals and murders
The main character Scarpetta is a chief medical examiner as well as a lawyer and a consultant to the FBI. She is unique and fascinating, but can be annoying at times, especially when she starts whinning about the poor eating habits of the people she works with! I also thought the story was drawn out and a little slow at times. There were too many sub-plots as well as clues that got forgotten and important details that got changed (editor?) But, despite the little draw backs, the suspense held my attention and kept me reading!

I was a bit disappointed in Kay Scarpetta's self-aggrandizing. I did not remember that from other Scarpetta books. There was also a number of times when product brand names were mentioned en passant which makes me suspicious that these were paid product placements.
Aside from that, not bad, but I've read better Scarpetta books.

I think all of Patricia Cornwells books are excellent. If you like getting into the forensic side of things in a mystery thriller, then her books are for you.

This is one of the few paperback series that I have kept. They are intelligently written from a professional woman's point of view. Very detailed. A small amount of formula doesn't detract from the entertainment value. I have read this series again and again.
Helpful Score: 1
This book is kind of morbid, given the subject matter, however it is fascinating, if you don't mind graphic description of bodily decomposition. Like many of Patricia Cornwell's novels it goes deep into the realm of postmortem forensic examinations. It's a great read, but you might want to leave the lights on :)

I loved the way Patricia Cornwell is able to paint a distinct picture without wasting one word. A MUST READ if you love crime/drama.

Cornwell at her best
A thriller!~!
one of her best
Kay Scarpetta forensics novel. Very well written, fast-paced.
Dr. Kay Sxarpetta at her best, will keep you up way into the night.
A story featuring Kay Scarpetta who visits the real Body Farm in Knoxville, Tennessee to help solve a crime.
Another contemporary crime book from Cornwell. She calls it a forensic thriller.
Little Emily Steiner left a church meeting late one afternoon and strolled toward home along a lakeside path; a week later, her nude body was discovered, bound in blaze-orange duct tape. Called by the North Carolina authorities, forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta recognizes similarities to the gruesome work of a serial killer who has long eluded the FBI But as she tries to make sense of the evidence, she is left with questions that lead her to the Body Farm, a little known research facility in Tennessee where, with the help of some grisly experiments, she might discover the answer. It is Scarpetta alone who can interpret the forensic hieroglyphics that eventually reveal a solution to the case as staggering as it is horrifying. But she must also endeavor to help her niece, Lucy, who is embroiled in controversy at Quantico. And Scarpetta, too, is vulnerable, as she opens herself to the first physical and emotional bond she has felt in far too long a time. Tenacious and brilliant, tender and gentle, this is Scarpetta even more realized and poignant than we've seen her before--in a stunning achievement from a best-selling author at the peak of her powers.
Kay Scarpetta at her chilling and thrilling best!! This one will make you ascertain that the doors are securly locked!
When an eleven-year-old girl is found murdered, Kay Scarpetta, Chief Medical Examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia, gets another chance at stopping one of the most heartless and horrifying serial killers of her career: the demented Temple Gault.
excellent book!!!!

This was really my first book read from this category, and it intrigued me. At times, it didn't feel like a writer was writing it, but I think it was probably deliberate. All in all, it's a good read.
THis book was a no put down book.. I loved it
Could not put this book down.
AWESOME from word 1. I am a big Patricia Cornwell fan! I love all of her books. It is very high tech and full of forensic detail. It has all the eerie suspense too.
This book is great, and has many twists and turns. I couldn't put it down! I haven't read anything by Patricia Cornwell before, but I have definately enjoyed this book, and hope to read more by her soon!!
PRETTY GOOD! LUCY FIGURES IN THIS MORE THAN MOST, WHICH I ENJOYED.
Another of my favorites in the Dr. Kay Scarpetta series of forensic novels. This one takes Scarpetta to Black Mountain, North Carolina a sleepy little town...where they discover the corpse of an 11 yr old girl and the trail leads Scartpetta to the "pathologists' playground known as the Body Farm" for answers.
Hang onto your hats, another compelling read!
Hang onto your hats, another compelling read!
Part of the Kay Scarpetta series. Crisp pacing and outstanding character development mark this whodunnit following the abudction and murder of a child in a sleepy North Carolina mountain community. Cornwell tips the identity of the baddy too early on, but it's a compelling read to see how long it will take Scarpetta to figure out what we already know.
Poorly labeled here! This book is Patricia Cornwell's "The Body Farm" It is a UK release but that is the only difference from the American version.
Very good read. Very graphic and a bit disturbing.

Good Scarpetta book. One of my favorite ensemble book casts ever!
A puzling and terrifying crime occurs in North Carolina. A child is murdered. Forensic pathologist Dr. Kay Scarpetta investigates. I liked this book.
If you like Cornwell or any Who Done It type mysteries you need to read this one
As I already stated, this author uses imagery and fiction to spin tales of remarkable realism. The Kay Scarpetta character (who is a forensic doctor as well as other credits) is believable and this book is a great read for anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers.
This is a gripping novel.
Have read alot of her books, really liked this one
This is one of the most unusual stories I have ever read.
This seires is great
Very interesting book, loved it!

Love, love, love Patricia Cornwell! This book is based on the Body Farm, a place where scientists study the forensics of decaying bodies to determine how to look at bodies found by law enforcement.

Cornwell just does good mysteries. I figured this one out early but it was good to the last page.
Patricia Corwell's series starring Kay Scarpetta as the Chief Medical Examiner is one of the best series of books I have read. Mysteries have never been my genre, but I love the CSI TV series and this book intrigues me in the same manner. Corwell is very knowledgeable and her writing style is descriptive and flowing as well as easy to read. Its not so packed with technical jargon that you cant sit and enjoy a nice quiet read without having to reach for a dictioary.
One of her earlier ones, very good.
Excellent!
I've just recently started reading the Dr. Scarpetta books. This one is a good read - it held my attention and I couldn't wait to get to the end to figure out just what had happened in the murder. I have many other books in this series that I can't wan't to read.
well written. engaging main character.
As with all the Scarpetta novels, it's a hit!
Very engaging subject matter for anyone who is interested in forensics.
a Kay scarpetta mystery with plenty to keep you interested
I've read alot of her books. Like the others this one keeps you guessing "all the pacing and suspence Cornwell fans have come to expect..Her latest will cause a few sleepless nights"

Love kay scarpetta
Excellent, could not put it down!
On the 16th of oct. Shadowy deer crept to the edge of dark woods beyond my window as the sun peeked over the cover of the night. Plumbing above and below me groaned, and one by other rooms went bright as sharp tattoos from ranged I could not see riddled the dawn....
Patricia Cornwell and her knowledge of forensic pathology has written another thriller about the murder of young girl and it's chilling reminiscence of a serial killer who has yet to be captured. One of her best!
This is a good mystery - kept me reading to see how it would end. I've read some of Cornwell's other books and the story of the characters' lives keeps building, but I don't think that would loose anyone who hasn't read other books.
Great Patricia Cornwell book as usual.

ANOTHER KAY SCARPETTA MYSTERY.
My first Patricia Cornwell book, and I couldn't put it down. A smart writer, with layers of allusions and occasional homage to real-life artists and scientists, Cornwell is a master of the genre. A real page-turner! Don't start this book on a work night!
A good book, but not the best by Patricia Cornwell.
Excellant!

Patricia Cornwell is a great author... or so I've been told. I have read several of her books and I just don't think they are that great. However, Many other people like her and she's selling more books than I am, so I don't feel I have room to complain.
