This is my favorite of the 4 Simic books I own. This one seems to teter on the darker side. I feel like he plays it less safe in this collection.

Simic still uses a less is more approach that works well in this book.

After reading this one and going into Wedding From Hell and Noiseless Entourage I found myself looking and anticipating the approach he demonstrated in Gods and Devils. Nonetheless, Simic is one of the best "known" poets writing today.

Read Franz Wright a contemporary and fellow Pulitzer Prize winner. Wright has delivered consistently in every one of his books that I own and has darkness in early work leading to light. He makes the transition from despair to hope extremely well and does not lose the edge of his earlier work.
