At the turn of the 17th Century in Prague, the Holy Roman Emperor seeks an exilir for immortality, a rabbi creates a Frankensteinish golem to protect the people of the Judenstadt, and Rochel, bastard daughter of a Jewish mother, seeks love and happiness.

Every once in a while I discover a book that just captures my attention so completely that I feel like I am there. This book was one of those - it swept me away to 1601 Prague under Emperor Rudolph II. While this is a rich piece of historical fiction there are two stories between the covers - Rudolph's quest for an eternal earthly life and Rochel's quest for love and happiness. The book switches between the two stories, yet they are inexplicably intertwined.

My book club chose this as their first read and our discussion is planned for this coming weekend. Everyone who has finished is so far has told me they've enjoyed it.

That pretty much sums it up.
