The story details the restrictions of a well born woman's life when Bonny Prince Charlie plotted for the English throne. Alpin, orphaned and ignored, is shipped to Barbados by her uncle- she is 6 years old, uncontrollable and unloved. She makes a life there and plans for her future, only to be manipulated by the men in her life once again. She vows revenge while she is forced to return to the first "home" she knew. She is pitted against her former playmate, now lord of the manor, in order to acheive her goal of freeing the slaves she left behind. Well developed characters and interesting plot.
