Son to CI Syn and Seax Shahara Dagan, Devyn Kell has everything: trained as an assasin, a filch, heir to his parent's shipping empire. Dang, the man even plays the piano. So what gives? The man gets into the league (heeellllooooo!!!!! Haven't you read the earlier novels? Did he ever listened to his parents and uncles rantings about the bad bad league?) and learns that the league is not about protecting the innocents. (big DUH!)
Anyway, the man ditches the league (and the people from his unit! -For that alone he should be sent to whatever works as Gaul in that universe-) and now he is some sort of Robin Hood.
Enters the dispossesed heroine Alix Garran, bent by the big bad into a weapon for getting Devyn into jail. We meet the kids from the heroes from earlier novels, problems get solved, boy gets girl, ho-hum.

It just seems like there were just too many convenient "facts" that were thrown out there and you had to accept it for what it was. There was no depth; and the deux ex machina at the end had me screaming bloody murder.

One last thing:
How did "manwhore" Caillan Dagan become an Emperor?? Did I miss something???

OK-I'm back to loving the series. [I had some trouble with the heroine in book 2 - but she's the hero's mom in this one and has improved with age.:]

Devyn is the son of Sin and Shahara from Born of Fire and like his father is doctor and a world saver. The most inexplicable point for me was here - why was he working for the League at the start of the book? Didn't Mom, Dad, and Uncle Nykarian make clear to him that protecting the innocent is WAY down on the League's To-Do list? Of course, some of Nykarian's kids take the League Assassin route too...

Alix is the tortured heroine who is sent out to bring him down. She figures out early on that he is not the bad guy he's been painted, but what's a girl with a mom and younger sister being held captive by Very Bad People to do?

It has action, romance, humor, and all the characters were entertaining along with some interesting twists and bit parts for the players and some of the children from the first two books. What's not to love?

Definitely read in order...

League

2. Born of Fire (2009)
3. Born of Ice: Love in Another Time, Another Place (1994)

4. Fire and Ice also appears in In Other Worlds (omnibus) (2010)

Born of Ice is a fast paced and action packed thriller! Devyn son of Syn and Shahara is a runner wanted by the League. Accused of smuggling and other crimes they will do anything to take him down. Including planting a female who resembles his dead finance in his path.

Alix is a slave who has been used and abused by everyone in her life. Her mother and sister are being held until she finds a way to bring Devyn to justice for crimes against the league. When Devyn is nice to her she doesn't know why. She knows she is nothing but a slave... dare she dream for more?

Great story that will keep you flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night!! be warned!

Read from April 16 to 20, 2011

Devyn is such a sweetie. Love him and Alix together. Paden surprised me at every turn, I would have never guessed the kind of character he became.

I'm a huge SK fan, but I didn't like this installment as much as the first two of the League series. I liked it, just not as much. I think it is because there was too big a skip between Book 2 and this one.

this book is about 30 years after the others, and you get to see how each previous character turned out - kiara, syn & shahara, darling, hauk, jay. they are all now royalty or high ranking officials living openly. in this book you meet their children, who were all raised together. i really liked the characters. they were all trained since birth to be assassins, filtchs,or smugglers like their parents for charitable purposes. this story is about devyn, syn & shahara's son. he was a league doctor and flipped one day over the bombing of a village and killed his unit and saved his adopted son. so now he's traveling around the galaxy and fighting the good fight by smuggling medical supplies to impoverished areas. of course, the league wants him dead. also one of syn's enemies in a high ranking position sent in a spy, alix, to dig up dirt on Devyn, they fall in love, lots of fighting, betrayal, etc. i loved the book, it was similar to syn and shahara's story except most of the people hadn't had the horrible childhoods they did. the characters are more confident of their self-worth and place in the world - on top.
