This is just another excellent mystery from Ms. Wentworth. I think the personal relationship between two of the main characters was one she hadn't used before. If she did I don't remember it, and this is the 20th or 21st book of hers I've read.

However, I was immensely proud of myself for figuring out who did the killing and how it was arranged so it was overlooked by the police. --- :-) --- And I did it before Miss Silver reveals it. Of course, it helps if you've read hundreds of mysteries, including ones which used the misleading plot device in this book. Since this was written in 1952, I wonder if Ms. Wentworth was the first to use this plot device. Wouldn't surprise me.

From back cover: Miss Silver accepts a visit from Mr. Lewis Brading, a collector of jewelry. His famous collection is housed within a stronghold on the grounds of a country club, and no one has access to it but he and his secretary, James Moberly. Brading is concerned about security in the light of recent and unusual occurences. Miss Silver offers him sound advice, but in arrogance he refuses it. A few weeks later he is found murdered amidst his jewels. Randal March, the Chief Constable of Ledstow, asks Miss Silver to investigate Brading's death. Since she is in possession of a letter from the victim, and some sensitive information about James Moberly's past, she is glad to oblige March with the benfits of her usual discretion and good sense to solve this most perplexing mystery.

Another good 'Miss Silver' mystery. The formula is the same: background, murder, police,Miss Silver solves the mystery. This is the second story by Ms. Wentworth that has the main female character leaving her husband over a misunderstanding that could have easily been explained. Here us a 'wonder'-I wonder if Ms. Wentworth had a similar experience during her lifetime? I am making my way through the series. These vintage mysteries cut to the chase. There is no lurid sex scenes or gruesome violence. However, in this one Ms. Wentworth decided to educate us on the jewels and their macabre background (I skipped at lot of it.) Recommend.
