This book was okay. The story is a bit anti-climatic because you are aware of who the killer is throughout the book... it's mentioned several times. So, finishing this book is a requirement if you want to see how the killer is finally caught and if the lead characters hook up. A weak plot in my opinion.

While I didn't enjoy this as much as other Nora Roberts' books, I enjoyed it enough to read twice. It's somewhat of a mystery. First published in 1988.

Grace McCabe was shocked to find her sister Kathleen living in a grungy D.C. suburb, supplementing her income as a phone sex operator after a bitter divorce. But with the company Fantasy, Inc. guaranteeing its employees complete anonymity, how dangerous could it really be? Grace was soon to learn the answer when she returned home one night to a horrifying scene that might have come from one of her own novels. Ignoring the warnings of cool-headed detective Ed Jackson, Grace sets her own daring trap to rouse a killer out of hiding. But what can protect her from a brilliant madman whose lust for murder stops at nothing....and no one?

I liked it OK. It's a quick read and not terribly memorable. It is well paced though. I think the author has a good feel for timing and how a mystery reader wants the story to flow. I, personally, liked it because it was set in the DC area. There's not a lot of in depth, inside information about the town, which is probably good readers who haven't been there. It's not a constant tangent that's enough to annoy them by distracting from the plot - just enough to flesh it out and set the scene credibly.

"DESIREE," HE MURMURED, "I LOVE YOU"
With his eyes on hers, he began to unbuckle his belt. She snatched up a paperweight and heaved it as she dashed to the door. It grazed the side of his head.
It was a nightmare, she thought. But dreams didn't hurt. She heard her blouse rip even as she struggled.
"You promised. You promised," he said over and over. He coud feel her skin now, soft and hot, just as he'd imagined. Nothing was going to stop him.
The passion was exploding in his head, but not the way he'd wanted. Her screaming was tearing into him, spoiling it. "Stop it!" But she wouldn't stop screaming. She scratched, but the pain only inflamed his need, and fury. She'd lied. This wasn't the way it was supposed to be. She was a liar and a whore, and still he wanted her.
Flinging a hand out, she shoved, knocking over the table. The phone fell on the floor beside her head.
And he took the cord and wrapped it around her throat, pulling hard until the screamming stopped........

From Nora Roberts, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Villa and Carolina Moon, comes a classic tale -- a searing novel of twisted passion and lethal cunning, available in hardcover for the first time.

Superstar mystery novelist Grace McCabe needs to unwind after a grueling book tour, and visiting her sister, whom she hasn't seen in months, seems the perfect solution. But Grace is surprised to find the fastidious Kathleen living in a grungy Washington, D.C., neighborhood. Kathleen, reeling from a bitter divorce and the loss of her son, is saving every penny of her teacher's salary to hire a hotshot lawyer for a custody battle.

Then Grace discovers that Kathleen is boosting her income with an unlikely profession: as an at-home phone-sex operator. Known as Desiree to the clients of Fantasy, Inc., Kathleen is living life on the edge. Yet how dangerous could it really be? With the ironclad anonymity the agency guarantees its employees, could anyone ever track her down?

Grace finds out one cherry-blossom-scented night when she comes home to find her sister dead, strangled with the cord of her "special" phone. Suddenly Grace's life turns into a scene from one of her own books -- the horror, the tight-lipped police, the shattered survivor. Only this time the survivor is Grace herself.

But she isn't waiting around for the police to catch up with the killer. Instead she creates a daring trap to lure the killer to her. Her plan goes against every coolheaded instinct of Detective Ed Jackson, the lead investigator on the case. He's read all of Grace's books and might have been the perfect consultant for the one she's working on, though in this real-life murder, she's the last complication he needs.

He's determined to keep Grace out of harm's way, but it's too late. Her trap has already worked. She has aroused the attention of a brilliant madman, and now nothing may be able to protect her from the murderous lust that drives this killer down a path of ecstasy laced with death.
