Ann Rule is my favorite author of true crime stories. She has a passion for the victims and a desire to tell the stories correctly, calling in all the right sources at all the right times.
This book entails the story of the Blackthornes - sweet Sheila Blackthorne who fell in love with a man who was a handsome charmer - that didn't reveal the voilent, controlling sociopath he really was.

This is the first full-length book by Ann Rule that I've read, but it won't be the last. What a twisted tale of abuse, legal wrangling, and brutal murder. Rule begins at the very beginning, with her main characters' parents' marriages, and walks us through Sheila's and Allen's lives apart, together, and apart again. Unlike a novelist, Rule cannot spring a surprise ending on her readers, so she must keep us enthralled by writing well, and she does.

Every Breath You Take was the second Rule book I've read. I didn't think she was as unbiased as she was in Small Sacrifices. I believe that one of the victim's family members (for EBYT) asked her to write this book; maybe that's why there is such a slant. Anyway, it's about a woman named Sheila who marries Alan. He's very controlling and abusive. She ends up leaving him and for the next 10 years, they are in court over the kids and money. He eventually gets her killed and the police try to find a way to prove his guilt.

This book shows you how no fiction writer can come up with a story worst than the truth. It seems hard to believe people were unaware how one man can fool so many people and just how depraved mankind can be against people they are supposed to "love".
This book shows the traits of a true sociopath and psycopath with no conscience whatsoever. It shows how one person hell-bent on living as if he does not have to follow the rules of the law or honor what most people see as a certain kind of human moral conduct most society lives by, creates a pure living hell for the people closest to him.
He thrives on taking pleasure in creating his own world and hurts anyone who gets in his way. Ann Rule shows the worst kind of person we can know exists and shows both sides of the story. She gives you his background and what perhaps drove him to become the cruel person he became and what his exwife had to live with because of his possessive revenge. It is a gripping, true story that leaves you relieved that you never knew this person and broken hearted for the family he destroyed.

Ann Rule's unique style allows readers to appreciate the book without being drowned in the legalities of non-fiction crime stories. Ann Rule is the queen when it comes to true-crime writing! This book is no exception; you will be hooked after the first page.
This book was written wonderfully by Ann Rule. I have not come across a book of hers yet that I didn't like. I love this true crime book of hers because she has written it with such passion with so much detail you feel as if you know the people in the book.

This is such a good book. This was the first Ann Rule book I have ever read and oddly enough I read it after I had exited an abusive relationship that made me realize that although I had it bad, it could have been worse. Ann Rule writes in a neutral manner but with great respect to the victim and the victims family. You will not want to put this book down and will want to finish reading it in one day.

I love Ann Rule!!! This was another book I just couldn't put down. Allen is a crazy ex and we just see it to much. His current wife Maureen is still in the dark too. My heart goes out to all the kids. RIP Shelia.
