Brian paused. Something made him reach out and take a broadhead out of the quiver and lay it across the bow, even though the moment without paddling cost him his forward motion. He thought, This is silly, I'm being a worrywart, but positioned the bow close to him just the same.

Then dug with the paddle again, pulling hard for the island, the dog whimpering and growling.

Gary Paulson is one of the rare authors who can truly write for boys. This is an excellent adventure in the great outdoors. This is a companion to his book Hatchet.

Dear Mr Gary Paulsen.

This book was way too short. And I want to know what happened after Brian killed the bear. You say in your ending that people keep telling you to write more about Brian. Well, count me among those too!

Sigh.... Unfortunately, Mr Paulsen died in 2021.

When I got this book out and placed it among the other books I was reading, I kept avoiding opening it as I knew I could read it in one sitting and then it would be over and I didn't want it to be over. But now it's been read.

I think two of the reasons I thoroughly enjoyed this five book series is that I enjoy nature and feel at home there, even to spending many of my vacations wilderness camping deep in the Rockies. Plus, I also have a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries and fully understand the author's discussion about not all bears being like Winnie the Pooh.

If you have a young boy interested in nature, but he doesn't like to read, Gary Paulsen's books will cure that problem.

I really enjoyed this reading, but I miss Peter Coyote's reading it. His voice is just made to read Brian's story.
