I absolutely loved this book. The whole time I read it I envisioned Constance to be just like Nicole Kidmann in "Far and Away" with Tom Cruise. Because of the red hair and the saucy personality. This was definitely a good CLEAN romance.

A story of what happened to a woman brought over on a Bride Ship. Wonderful story! Gives you a side to the story of historical slave trade of women.....Not the same as today but a historical version. It is a happy story with twists and turns.

This book is by far the best I have read all year, I did not want to stop reading it, I loved It, I laughed, I cried, and I would recommend it to everyone it is based on what really happened back then and I truly enjoyed it when I couldn't read it I couldn't stop thinking about it and couldn't wait to make time to read it again. This is my first book that I have read by Deanne Gist and I will make sure to read more books of her's. If you haven't read it you must read it soon if you like christian romance that is in the old times, I am loning it to my mom then when I get it back I will repost it so others can enjoy it it's to good a book not to share.

An excellent blend of humor, tension and inspiration.
I enjoyed a look into colonial history/life, the way Gist described it whether it was completely accurate or not made me feel like I was actually there. Lady Constance is a very entertaining character, several times I laughed out loud.

entertaining, easy read. Not the typical plot, refreshing.

Good story about the days of tobacco brides being brought over from England for VA colony farmers. The main character is a feisty little redhead. Enjoyed the book.

The book is a pretty good Historical Romance, please keep in mind it definately has major Christian overtones. The beginning is slow going, the middle is great, and the end went a little to fast. If you like romances without the "dirty" stuff this book is for you. If not, (like me) a victorian smut story is what you should look for.

This book has dramatic twist throughout it. This was one of the first books I really didnt want to end.

This book starts out a little slow, but by the end, I couldn't put it down. Has a good story line, I would like a little more romance, but what is there is worthwhile.

This book takes place in the Virginia Colonies, 1643. Lady Constance Morrow snuck aboard a ship without a chaperone in order to say goodbye to her dearest Uncle Skelly who was being transported to the colonies. But unfortunately for her she believed no one would ever harm the daughter of an Earl, but also she had no idea of the danger that she was in for. She left her maid behind when she bordered the ship and the captain had her thrown in the hold along with the female felons who were being sent as `tobacco brides' for the colonist farmers.
This is really a fun book to read. I do recommend it.

I enjoyedthis book by Deeanne Gist, her first novel. Lady Constance Marrow is brought to America against her will and sold along with other "tobacco brides". She is fiesty and in the beginning wants to go back to England. she knows nothing of the self-sufficient ways of the colonists but she grows to love both America and her husband.

Inspirational story of a headstrong and intelligent Lady Constance who challenges the endurance of a wealthy Virginia farmer. She has no idea as to how to cook and enjoys working on Math equations more than housework !

A very good fresh breath to Christian fiction.

Good book, but very preachy. It was a very sweet romance story with great characters but the religious overtones became heavy enough at the end to detract from the story, at least for me.
Helpful Score: 1
I liked this book, but be very aware that Deeanne Gist writes to a more liberal audience...in her opinion this is to reach out to a different crowd. Be aware of this, if you buy any of her other works.
Helpful Score: 1
This isn't my favorite of Deeanne Gist's books but not because of her writing. I am irritated at her "hero" and his mind set. But I figure if an author can get me emotional about a book (doesn't matter what type of emotion) then she has captured my interest.
If the male character had been a bit different I would have enjoyed it more. But I will continue to read her books as I have very much enjoyed all the rest of them

This was a Christian Hisorical romance, and a very quick read. I enjoyed learning about some things that really happened when our country was just starting out, even is some of it was disturbing. It was not as predictable as I thought it would be. I would recommend this book.

LOVED THIS BOOK! This is an author who can describe settings and scenes to where there is a movie playing in your head. Could not put it down and was sad when it ended because i wanted more. The story line was amazing. I'm so happy I found this book and recomend it to anyone who wants a EXTREMELY good read.

Lady Constance board a ship to say goodby to her uncle and finds herself kidnapped aboard a tobacco bride ship bound for America. She is sold to one man and won in a card game by another. Her introduction to the new world with Indians, strange animals and primitive customs is extremely interesting as well as funny. The book is great with wonderful characters and a historic overtone. There is also trajedy mixed in along the way making this a romantic page turner.

A good, clean romance, historical in nature. Takes place in the 1600's. Basic belief in God is often mentioned, but not preachy. Simple, easy read. Predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless!

The "tobacco brides" board a ship leaving England for Virginia. They are bartered to Virginia colony farmers--tobacco barrels for a bride. One farmer doesn't want a wife, but that is what he gets. A great summer read!

I really enjoyed this book. There were times when I actually laughed out loud. She did a good job at making the characters real, they were funny and sarcastic and I found it easy to feel for them all because their emotions were so real.

I wasn't sure whether I was going to enjoy this book. But, unlike other books, this one gets better and better the further along you read. It had an interesting historical, if not unsettling background of America, in it's earlier years. Good read!
Helpful Score: 1
This was an enjoyable read, and even though the ending was good, there were times when everything didn't go well simply because it "can't happen to the main characters." Seemed a bit more realistic than a lot of historical romance books I've read. I'm not much into romance and while it is definitely a part of this book, the history and action are strong enough that the romance seems like just one more part of the story and not the main focus. Highly recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction or romances.

This book is not that bad. It is about a woman who is sent to Virginia against her will and becomes a tobacco bride to a farmer who didnt really want to marry her. The author, Deeanne Gist, researched the time period well. The book does have a little more romance than what I look for in historical fiction but it was not too bad.

this is hands down one of the best books I have ever read the story really drew you in to this way of life and the happiness and hardship, but what i really loved was that it has something for everyone, laughter drama tears so much fun. the main girl is smart and sassy and its written well, gist has another great book!!!
Book is an easy read, but shallow. I ordered it after the rave reviews, but thought the author dwelled way to much on physical attraction- not much depth for a marriage that time and place will have its share of difficulties. Pick it up for the day you don't want to think too deeply, My teenage sons would think their mom's brain flew out the window, though, if they were to thumb through it.
I loved the way this was written so smooth and this made it hard to put down--it is on the spirtual level but no preaching-just good reading. I have to love a book to order the next one or anything else by that author-and i did order the other one of these. I am anchious to start it. It was a very entertaining read.
Beautiful book, one of my favorites. I couldn't put it down!
Captivating story line, good plot & characters.
This is an excellent book. Historical christian fiction. I love Deeanne Gist. Looking forward to reading her other books. Cannot put the book down! Highly recommend!
This was my first book by Deeanne Gist, but will not be my last. Wonderful blend of colonial America and Christian romance. Lots of hardships and heartaches, but much faith, too.
This was a good book, but not great. There were some surprises and the historical genre provided some interest...but all in all I've read some that were much better.
As a math teacher I was VERY intrigued by the math "puzzles," but as an avid Christian fiction reader I was more impressed with the flow of the story with humor, intrigue, suspense, and yes, love. Don't worry, the math DOES NOT take away from the story for those less math literate.
A Terrific first novel by Deeanne Gist. Would read anything she writes!

Great book! I couldn't put it down. A new author to me and I will definately look for her other books!
Interesting story of a priviledged young woman ending up on a ship sailing from England to the colonies by mistake. A fiesty young woman who was ill equipped to live in the early colonies. Very engaging story of love and hardship.

I have read several books by this author and this one is the best, by far! I enjoyed it from cover to cover and could not put it down.
A most enjoyable read. Carries you through a spectrum of emotions. At times you'll laugh and at times you'll need a tissue. I loved the book!
Great book: fun read, great dialogue, American historical fiction, romance. Read it in nearly one sitting!
The story of a noble girl who is mistakenly sent to America as a tobaco bride and how she learns to love and serve her husband in this new land. The author lets us see into the mind of this girl and the reader "lives" her experiences!
This is the first book by this author that I have read and I really enjoyed it and will look for more titles by this same author.
The characters were smart, witty and while there was tragedy there was also lots of humor. Overall a great story.

I loved this story and it's characters. Smart, witty and with a great story line! I will read more by this author!
Another great historic romance by Deeanne Gist. One of my favorite reads! Try it you will like it. It is my favorite book by her.
I read this book for a book club. I loved this book. The members of the book club liked this book better than the Measure of a Lady book. This book had all of the elements of a good book.
One of the most engaging historical fiction books I have ever read. This was the first book by this author that I had ever tried, and I quickly became a fan and began looking for all her other books. The characters are well developed. For once, the main character is a woman who, although filled with frustration with a situation, she isn't as ridiculously stubborn and unreasonable as I have found the female character to be in books that are similar. She has spunk, but she has a soft heart. She speaks her mind, but not rudely. She is a refined woman of nobility, but she is willing to adapt. Terrific read!
A very good book, I look forward to reading more of Deeanne Gist.
This book is very good, I will be happy to see this author produce more stories for us to enjoy.
I really enjoyed this book. It was one of those books that is hard to put down.
Deeanne Gist hit the mark again with this FABULOUS book set in the colonial times of the mid 1600's. The history was accurate and the characters were entertaining! I laughed several times (which seems to happen with all her books!) and couldn't put it down! A great read and I hope that there is a sequel so I can find out what happens to some of the characters...
I enjoyed this book so much. I was disappointed in Courting Trouble but this one didn't disappoint. Good characters and plot moves along- this was a stellar first book
Totally enjoyed this book.
I absolutely loved this book! I didn't want to put it down!
Great book. Very unique plot.
This book was a really enjoyable one to read. I was so encapture with the story line it was hard to put the book down. I recommend this book. It truly was great reading.
I loved the book! It was a fun story
Interesting story about Colonial times in America. Recommended

Great Historical Romance!
Wonderful book! Very easy read!
I really enjoyed this book! Lady Constance Morrow is mistakenly kidnapped and shipped to Virginia as a "tobacco bride" against her will. Drew O'Connor only wants a maid to tend his home and care for his young sister. What he ends up with is a wife - Constance.
Any ship arriving from England means good news for Virginia colony farmers. The "tobacco brides" would be on board - eligible women seeking a better life in America, bartered for with barrels of tobacco from the fields. Drew O'Connor isn't stirred by news of the ship full of brides. Still broken-hearated from the loss of his beloved, he only wants a maid to tend his house and care for his young sister. Whe he ends up with is a wife-a feisty redhead who claims she is Lady Constance Morrow, daughter of an Earl, brought to America against her will. And she wants to go straight back to England as soon as she can. She hasn't the foggiest notion how to cook, dares to argue with her poor husband, and spends more time working on mathematical equations than housework. What kind of a wife is that? Drew's Christian forbearance is in for some testing. Headstrong and intelligent, deeply moral but incredibly enticing, Constanc turns what was supposed to be a marriage of convenience into something most inconvenient, indeed.
I enjoyed the Lady Constance Morrow-her struggles and humor.
Deanne Gist is a good writer. However, her books are far too sexually descriptive. I would not suggest these books, especially for single women and teen girls. They remind me of the Harlequin Romances I, unfortunately, read 25 years ago. If you are looking for something spiritually uplifting I suggest going elsewhere.
Tobacco bride Lady Constance Morrow is brought to America against her will. What kind of a wife knows more about mathematics than household skills?
