I really enjoyed this book. Having seen the movie first, which is one of my favorites by the way, I found a number of differences, mostly just things that made the action happen faster, but some scenes were added even to the movie, such as the fight between Daniel and Mark. Unlike the movie, Bridget wasn't under the impression that Mark stole Daniel's fiance as happened in the movie. I was trying to figure out why this difference, but I guess it made a strong case for the dislike between the two guys very obvious. So even though the movie wasn't true to the book on a few issues, and there were some scenes in the movie that never occurred in the book, I still like them both equally. Besides, seeing the movie first, and picturing Hugh Grant (YUMMY!) in my mind whenever there was talk of Daniel, well I kinda liked that.

As I was reading, I found myself continually pointing out all the things Bridget was doing wrong with regards to dieting, time management, and so on... all the things she kept saying she was going to work on. For instance, she'd often count calories without any consideration for the food content itself. She's very disorganized and though the author claims that the reader will often think they see themselves in Bridget, I didn't find this to be the case at all with me. Instead, I found myself thinking of her as an unenlightened soul, whom as a friend, I wanted desperately to help to set her on the right path by pointing out to her all the little things she's doing wrong. LOL

This book was a very quick read. I got it read pretty much over a long weekend, even though we had friends from out of town staying at our house. It was just that easy to read in bed and not want to put down. :) I'm looking forward to the 2nd book in this series, which I should have soon.

Having never seen the movie I thought I would enjoy the book, but couldn't get into it at all. I kept hoping for it to get better, for Bridget to stop wallowing in alcohol, low self esteem and food, to GET A LIFE! But she never did. The whole thing left me feeling rather flat.

Such a funny story. I read the book long before the movie came out. The movie didn't do it justice.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked its sequel. I thought it was a little choppy and I got really tired of hearing how fat Bridget thinks she is when in actuality she is not fat at all. It is laugh out loud funny in places and is worth a read.

"I'm a forty-something, 20-odd year married male with absolutely no connection to Bridget Jones or any of the characters in this book, and still I find it a hoot. I just love the witty phrasing and preposterous, although for many, I'm sure, realistic, situations Bridget finds herself in.

My wife and I saw the movie recently, and also the follow-up, and had to get the books, too. The storyline is basically the same, but there are many deviances from the movie, enough so that the book feels perfectly fresh and unspoiled.

If you just enjoy witty twists on the English language, you'll probably have fun with this book regardless of what you may think of the plot-line and structure. I'm certain though, that people who live a life similar to Bridget's will have even more fun reading her diary."

Oh gosh.
I'm not Bridget Jones yet, but then I'm only twenty-one. That said, I have no doubt that I will be her in five years or less. She's funny but she isn't quite witty, she longs for fun but can never get things to work as she planned (dinner party disasters? I am SO there!) and fat. Oh, the fat. I obsess about it as much as she does; luckily my wobbly bits haven't had a chance to balloon out of control but I put so little effort into maintenance but I'm certain that I will soon aggressively calorie count, measure body parts, and worry over my lack of exercise while consuming cream puffs.
Thank goodness my mother hasn't lost all her marbles for a Portuguese sex god.
Yet.

The book's funny and realistic; I am v. tempted to begin keeping of diary again. I didn't expect it to be so fun, really - I just wanted to check it out because the movie was so popular. But it was really, really enjoyable, a great explorationn of the neurotic thirtysomething. Gotta say, Bridget's a lot more fun than Carrie Bradshaw.

I've never laughed so hard as I did during Helen Fielding's brilliant take on society, single women, married women, men and embarrassing mums. I am convinced that "Bridget Jones's Diary" is the perfect post-modern riposte to the nineteenth century "Pride and Prejudice."

I don't know how anyone could come out of this not loving Bridget. And Mark Darcy. And Shaz and Jude and Tom, but of course loathing Daniel and the irrepressible Pam Jones.

I read this book long before seeing the movie and I am so glad. The movie was just...okay. But the book was impossible to put down.

The one that started the whole "I'm single and miserable but I win in the end" genre of chick lit, and still the best. Easy to read, with an updated telling of "Pride and Prejudice" (the male love interest is even blessed with the surname Darcy!), this book is at times howl out loud funny. The movie stunk compared to the book, though I've heard that Helen Fielding had Colin Firth in mind when she wrote Darcy's dialogue for the book.

Anyway, yes, it's vacuous and shallow, but it's still a really fun read, even for a smug married like me.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. Not quite as good as I had expected it to be. I don't know that I really liked Bridget all that much and in a diary format, you need to like the character to like the book. I did like the movie quite a bit so since I saw it first perhaps that spoiled the book for me.

What single girl can't relate to Bridget Jones, with her obsessive worrying over her size, diet, drinking habits, and boyfriend status? This is one I pick up and re-read from time to time, just to have a laugh. Her mother is impossible, her friends infectious, and her boss dreadful. A quick, easy, and entertaining "chick book." Like it a lot.

Very few books make me laugh out loud, but this one did. I love Bridget. She is honest and goofy and hilarious. Although I enjoyed the movie it did not do the book justice. I also enjoyed the use of British slang as it added to the charm of this novel.

The quintessential Chic-Lit. With British humour to boot! I had a girlfriend who was having a bad day and loaned this to her to get her spirits back up. She didn't want to give it back so I had to get another copy from this site.

This Diary is brilliant! Simply, bloody Brilliant! This book was a riot from beginning to end and far superior to the movie (which was funny, but not nearly so). Bridget is EVERY girl surviving in Singletown! Quite certain that she's fabulous if only the world would go her way once in a while.
I love that this is a modern retelling of the classic Pride and Prejudice. Same sexy, haughty, irresistable Mr. Darcy. And ooooh, does Daniel make the naughtiest rogue!!! I was giggling through every page. As Bridget would say: v,v,v funny.

This is over 15 years old, but still enjoyed reading it very much. Helen Fielding writes with such wit. With a daughter who didn't get married until she was 40 (wedding was this summer), it was a very poignant story about what it is like to be in your 30's and single. Now that she is happily married, I am recommending that she read it.

Bridget is a 30+ singleton living in London, employed in a dead-end job, drooling over her boss and unable to loose weight despite counting calories of every morsel she eats. The analyzes every move and every breath of her prospective love interests and dissects them over drinks with her three faithful friends. Will she see that Mr. Darcy, top notch barrister, is the man for her despite being too busy dwelling on his hideous Christmas sweater? To find out we'll have to read her diary.

This is an incredibly funny book, unabashedly chick-lit and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to relax, unwind and develop some laugh lines. One can't help but sympathize with and root for Bridget, who is so self-analytical that she can't see past her doubts and the pile of self-help books and is adorable despite all her little quirks. She's a total klutz and it's amazing how she's managing to live on her own and keep a job and if she succeeds it is inevitably by stumbling into it rather than working for it. Now if only she would remember that Mr. Darcy isn't a subject of one of her men-are-from-mars books but a real man, who actually loves her, just the way she is!

I love the movie but didn't care for the book. It took me a year to get through it. It has cute moments (like the Colin Firth / Pride and Prejudice references), but all of my favorite parts from the movie weren't in the book. So, if you love the movie like me, you might be disappointed in the novel.

I've never seen the movie version of this book, but I appreciate Helen Fielding's attempts at comedy by creating a female character so flawed and jinxed, that it's impossible not to fall in love with her. I found it fun, hilarious, fresh, charming and a great read. Bridget Jones sees life from such an interesting point of view. She is crazed, loony and neurotic, yet at the same time she is like so many of us. She makes promises to herself to better her life, but usually gets distracted by someone or something else along the way. You can't help but laugh at the misfortunes and misadventures of her life. Highly recommended!

From the back cover:

"Bridget Jones's Diary is the devastatingly self-aware, laugh-out-loud daily chronicle of Bridget's permanent, doomed quest for self-improvement -- a year in which she resolves to: reduce the circumference of each thigh by 1.5 inches, visit the gym three times a week not just to buy a sandwich, form a functional relationship with a responsible adult -- and learn to program the VCR.

"Over the course of the year, Bridget loses a total of 72 pounds but gains a total of 74. She remains, however, optimistic. Through it all, Bridget will have you helpless with laughter, and -- like millions of readers the world round -- you'll find yourself shouting, 'Bridget Jones is me!'"

I've never seen the movie version of this, so I was really looking forward to enjoying the book. Jones is such a chaotic, immature thirtysomething that I had a really hard time feeling sympathy or joy for her various situations, and her mother is insufferable; it felt more like reading a psychological profile than an enjoyable piece of fiction. Two stars for clear writing and a few chuckles, but overall I wouldn't recommend.

In the course of the year recorded in Bridget Jones's Diary, Bridget confides her hopes, her dreams, and her monstrously fluctuating poundage, not to mention her consumption of 5277 cigarettes and "Fat units 3457 (approx.) (hideous in every way)." In 365 days, she gains 74 pounds. On the other hand, she loses 72! There is also the unspoken New Year's resolution--the quest for the right man. Alas, here Bridget goes severely off course when she has an affair with her charming cad of a boss. But who would be without their e-mail flirtation focused on a short black skirt? The boss even contends that it is so short as to be nonexistent.
At the beginning of Helen Fielding's exceptionally funny second novel, the thirtyish publishing puffette is suffering from postholiday stress syndrome but determined to find Inner Peace and poise. Bridget will, for instance, "get up straight away when wake up in mornings." Now if only she can survive the party her mother has tricked her into--a suburban fest full of "Smug Marrieds" professing concern for her and her fellow "Singletons"--she'll have made a good start. As far as she's concerned, "We wouldn't rush up to them and roar, 'How's your marriage going? Still having sex?'"

This is only the first of many disgraces Bridget will suffer in her year of performance anxiety (at work and at play, though less often in bed) and living through other people's "emotional fuckwittage." Her twin-set-wearing suburban mother, for instance, suddenly becomes a chat-show hostess and unrepentant adulteress, while our heroine herself spends half the time overdosing on Chardonnay and feeling like "a tragic freak." Bridget Jones's Diary began as a column in the London Independent and struck a chord with readers of all sexes and sizes. In strokes simultaneously broad and subtle, Helen Fielding reveals the lighter side of despair, self-doubt, and obsession, and also satirizes everything from self-help books (they don't sound half as sensible to Bridget when she's sober) to feng shui, Cosmopolitan-style. She is the Nancy Mitford of the 1990s, and it's impossible not to root for her endearing heroine. On the other hand, one can only hope that Bridget will continue to screw up and tell us all about it for years and books to come.

Loved it! Bridget is so real and flawed and hilariously funny. I think there is a little piece of Bridget in all women.

This is THE book that started the Chick Lit revolution. Although I love British humor, I couldn't get into this book. I started it three times on different occasions and just couldn't get past page 50. I found Bridget to be a bit self-absorbed but I guess that's the whole point. Good thing it was in diary form. Any other way would've been wrong.

Kind of got boring. Seemed like she talked about the same thing over and over and didn't have a very exciting ending. Maybe I felt this way because I saw the movie first?

Funny???? - Its hilarious!!!

I kept seeing myself in there - so it kept hitting home - and I'm a guy! We all have these problems sometime or another, see how they can be handled (or not!). Fast read.
