Really opens your eyes to the effect that alcohol can have on your life and what it does to our children and their health.

As an adoptive parent of a child (now young adult) born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, I highly recommend this book -- for pregnant mothers, teachers, professionals of all kinds who work with children or teens, and well, just about anyone. Very powerful, and true.

One of the few books written from the perspective of an adoptive single parent on the issue of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I'm only 1/2 way thru now but the story is very wordy and can really drag at times. I'm finding it hard to stay focused with the story when the author goes off in MAJOR length about some side story that could have been summed up in a few short sentences. Hopefully it will pick up somewhere thru the middle! Overall if you plan on doing a special needs adoption this book will be of interest since FAS is extremely common out there!

Some of the Critics Comments-
NY Times Book Review-
"The Broken Cord should be required reading for all medical professionals and social workers, and especially for pregnant women, and women who contemplate pregnancy, who may be tempted to drink."

Boston Globe-
"A big revolutionary book about integrating science and love...easy to read, hard to take, but not sad, because there's just too much love in it."

Detroit News-
"The deeply moving and fierce story of Michael Dorris' search for answers. Part memoir, part mystery, part love story, polemic, and social and public health story, this is the rare book that focuses attention like a magnifying glass on a hot sunny day. It burns."
