Buddies: Men, Dogs, and World War II
Buddies Men Dogs and World War II
Author: L. Douglas Keeney
One of the most effective forms of American propaganda during World War II was the morale-boosting dog or buddy photo. The photos in this collection are, for the most part, previously unpublished, and each is accompanied by the stories of the dogs and their service in Europe and the Pacific.

I was really looking forward to this book, but found it disappointing! The title states "dogs," but there were many other animals. The information for each photo was very terse. And while the author claims he looked through hundreds of photos of mascots, a number of the images didn't have an animal in them. And some of the images were duplicates of the same mascot.

I couldn't imagine spending $25 for a new copy. I volunteer at a humane society thrift store and I'll donate it there so someone can pick it up for a buck or two.

This is a wonderful picture book containing photos taken during WW II of the dogs that buoyed spirits and helped maintain the morale of servicemen during the war. A few are military working dogs, but most of them were mascots that served to help the men through the horrors and difficulties of war.
