This was Turow's first book. It is an exciting mystery, crime drama, courtroom book. The ending is such a surpise, that when I finished I wanted to read the book all over again to seek out the clues.

EXCELLENT WRITER, THOUGHTFUL AND PROVOKING. FULL OF TWISTS AND KEEPS YOU IN AWE OF THE HUMAN FRAILITIES.
Helpful Score: 2
Turow is really one of the best mystery writers I've read. This story has an entirely different tone than Presumed Innocent, even though the main character is the same (Sandy Stern). It deals with financial malfeasance, and it can be a little hard to follow, but it's well worth it.
Helpful Score: 1
A man facing an event so shattering that no part of his life is left untouched. It shows the family caught in hidden crimes, shocking secrets and warring passions.

If you like Grisham, you'll probably like Turow. It's easily-consumed drama from the legal world. Seemed like this was gonna be a big trend in the nineties and, well, I guess it was in a way.

If you are looking for a good legal thriller with a lot of court room drama, this is not your book. If you paragraph after paragraph that delves into family relationships and psychoanalysis, then yor will probably enjoy this book

As a retired lawyer, I enjoyed reading this book. The plot twists kept it entertaining.
I skipped the lovey-dovey part, and went straight to the juicy financial malfaesance parts, which are Scott Turow's strong suit, anyway.
This book reveals a family caught in a maelstorm of hidden crimes, shocking secrects, and warring passions. Recommended.
Totally different view of Sandy Stern compared to Presumed Innocent - kind of neat that the author can change perspective.

Scott Turow is an outstanding writer. He mixed the legal aspects with personal relationships giving the novel a good balance not always found in legal thrillers. If you liked "Presumed Innocent", you will love "The Burden Of Proof".
This is sorta the sequel to Presumed Innocent. Just as good maybe better for intrigue and suspense. Very good!

Sandy Stern has to cope with losing his wife who has commited suicide. How does a middle aged man make it through this tragedy? How does a reserved, formal lawyer re-enter the world as a single man? How does he manage to represent his adventuresome, risk taking brother-in-law. These are some of the challenges he faces.
Great read.

Great story,
Great story,
Another well-written mystery by the author of "Presumed Innocent". Those who read that book will recognize the protagonist of this one as the brilliant, elegant, and elusive lawyer who mastermined the defense of Rusty Sabich. The novel probes the character and private life of this complex man as he attempts to understand his wife's suicide while representing his rich but shady brother-in-law.
Really enjoyed this book.Keeps you guessing until the very end.
Another good Turow book!
from amazon....
Criminal defense lawyer Alejandro "Sandy" Stern copes with his wife's suicide, his three grown children and a government investigation of his brother-in-law's successful brokerage house. Turow develops a complex, satisfying plot, steeped in law and finance, that turns perhaps too often on coincidence but remains utterly faithful to its deeply probed characters.

Scott Turow is a fun read!
Good legal thriller
As always, Turow (author of Presumed Innocent) writes a fast-paced and exciting legal thriller. I think of him as the picky reader's Grisham.
With the exception of our main character, attorney Sandy Stern, being a pompous ass, this book was, actually, a fairly good read. I found myself torn at various times between wanting Sandy to fall hard, and then feeling sorry for him. We are started off being introduced to Sandys wife found dead from suicide, and what follows from there are so many dark ghosts from the family closet that one wonders if it will ever end. I dont feel so bad about my family now!
All-in-all, a decent storyline, with several surprises along the way that you wont see coming. I did find Sandys accent and manner of speaking to be a little pretentious and unrealistic, just so, and, at times, the story dragged on and I found my mind wandering, but if you can hang in there, youll probably enjoy it to the end, even if a reader/person like me finds the ending to be disappointing in that those who should have reaped what theyve sown, dont.

Scott Turow at his best--better plot and much more interesting central character than Presumed Innocent.
really enjoyed this book
Couldn't put this one down!
A very good legal mystery.
The f/up to Presumed Innocent, you read another story about Sandy Stern, this time he faces an event that shatters multiple parts of his life.
