From the back cover: "It is muster day in Rufford, Maine, when the local militia is massed to drill in ainticipation of new conflicts that may threaten the newborn American nation. In this chilly Autumn, violent passins and tempers inflamed in the wake of the recent war of independence still burn white hot. Now two men have been murdered, shattering a small town's fragile peace. It falls to Hannah Trevor, midwife, to piece together a patchwork of suspects and motivations that will ultimately reveal a killer. For she alone can save another who is being held responsible for the crimes...If you like historical fiction well written, you will love Margaret Lawrence's work.

I liked the historical setting of the story and thought the writting was good. I didn't think much of it as a mystery. The characters are compelling and the setting is rich. All in all, a good historical novel and a not-so-good mystery.
