This book is a very good read for anyone interested in Eastern Europe or Eastern European cultures. It is a very humanitarian aspect to viewing the gypsies that have been treated so horribly throughout history.

One of very few books I've ever found that give a believeable account of life as a Rom. A highly secretive, closed society, you're not sure how much of what is written is really the way it is or what the Gypsies want you to believe.

Interesting look into a culture not often highlighted in the media. Made a good discussion for our book club.

Wonderful reading. Absorbing. Gave me insight into a culture of which I had little awareness.

history, customs, stories, photos-fascinating look at a world most of us know little about (except for sterotypes)

"Sharp insights into the humor, language, wisdom and taboos of the Roma (gypsies)."
"Whether as handy scapegoats or figments of the romantic imagination, the gypsies have always been with us -- but never before have they been brought so vividly to life."
I read this book after visiting Romania and our encounters with gypsies there. This is an intimate look at a much disparaged minority.

Loved this book. Learned a lot about a people that seem to be overlooked so often.

A very good read, true story about life with the Gypsies. Their traditions, child prostitutes and home life. Sad but compelling, i just had to keep turning the pages. Very different life style than i had imagined. Well written, full of interesting facts. Author did a wonderful job of first hand research, being with them for 4 years and presenting the info in an unjudgemental way.
