I wish I knew where I had a recommendation for this book, because they were sadly mistaken. Wren is a medical examiner and the butcher is a serial killer. Wren is married, but she only has two interactions with him in the whole book. The dialogue is stilted and wooden. There were grammatical errors. Obviously a debut author, who should have stuck with her podcasts.

For most part, I liked this book. It had a creepy vibe to it and an interesting story. I enjoyed the true crime facts that were sprinkled throughout the book. It helped me relate even more. A couple issues I had was there needed to be a bit more work on the characters. I was able to get a sense of who they were but not enough to the point I cared about them. The other issue would be the ending. It was too quick and unbelievable. Would have liked a bit more pizzazz added to it. With the open ending, there is a possibility of another book. I would read it, if that is the case.

While I thought the story itself was good, this debut novel could use a better editor. There were several times I wasn't sure which victim was being discussed, which was very disorienting in the middle of the story, and at several points sentences didn't make sense and I had to re-read those paragraphs to figure out what was being said. However, the descriptions of the Louisiana bayou felt real and intense and were very well done. This was a three-star read for me.

I am giving this the whole 5* rating, I found it to be good for a debut story, the story is simple and doesn't go overboard with unnecessary descriptions or back stories, it keeps to the main plot and easy to read in one day

I liked the characters and had no problem keeping up with who is who, the author at one point did confuse me and I don't think she handled it right but it wasn't a big deal

I'll try to keep up with this author and see where she goes
