Not my favorite cozy in the world, probably won't read anymore by this author, some of the characters were just way to annoying!
Valued customer and old friend Thelma Chatwick is dead, and intrepid Denver dry cleaner Mandy Dyer is called upon to brush up her sleuthing skills and tidy up the investigation's loose ends. Mandy Dyer owns a dry cleaning business, and she is surprised when one of her regular customers dies and leaves her a bag of old clothes. When she finds out that her friend died of a fall down the basement stairs, her suspicions are aroused as the old lady had told her she never went downstairs because she did not want to risk a fall. She discovers the old clothes to have a multitude of buttons sewn on to them, and suspects they may be valuable, so she starts investigating, hoping to find evidence to support her suspicion of murder and have the police investigate.
For a light cozy mystery, this was okay, though I have read better. The information about button collecting was interesting, but overall the book was rather bland, and the characters at times a little irritating. I may read more of this series if another book comes my way, but I would not go out of my way to find them. I rate this 2.75 stars, rounded up to 3.

This book in the Mandy Dyer series has the typical scenario of Mandy investigating where the police don't want her. Mandy has determined that her friend Thelma Chadwick's couldn't have been accidental and that the dresses covered with buttons Thelma left her must be covered with clues, if only she can figure them out. A new romantic interest for Mandy is introduced, who is part of Mandy's high school history.
My only real complaint is the character of Nat. As the books progress, he becomes more and more of an irritant with his jumping to conclusions, rudeness, and putting career above his friendship with Mandy. I felt these characteristics were extreme in this book, however, I find myself hooked on this series, so I will put that complaint to the side!

Denver dry cleaner Mandy Dyer hears that one of her favorite customers Thelma Chadwick has died, fell down basement steps. Thelma leaves Mandy a mysterious bequest that convinces Mandy that Thelma has been murdered, and Mandy sets forth to solve the case. Expert dry cleaner tips here also...fun book.
Denver dry cleaner Mandy Dyer is shocked to learn that customer and dear friend Thelma Chadwick has died, victim of a tragic fall down the basement steps. The woman also left Mandy something - two trash bags packed with worthless old clothing. Full of questions, especially surrounding octogenarian Thelma's "fall" down steps she never used, Mandy notices some antique buttons sewn onto the dresses and suspects Thelma was trying to send her a message. Were those unusual buttons worth a small fortune? Had Thelma purposely put them on musty old garments nobody would look at twice? COnvinced the button mystery is linked to her friend's sudden demise, Mandy starts nosing around the local button-collecting clubs... and stumbles onto another murder. And while removing bloodstains may be a cinch for an expert dry cleaner, Mandy hopes she won't have to try her luck against a cold-blooded killer.
Were those unusual buttons worth a small fortune?Mandy is convinced that the button mystery is connected to her friend's sudden demise.
Really enjoyed this cozy mystery. Characters were fun, not developed as much as I'd like, but good enough. The protagonist, Mandy Dyer, talks to herself, a lot, and I enjoyed "hearing" her realistic thoughts.

I like the Mandy Dyer mystery series. Mandy owns a dry cleaner and that business seems to attract murder whether it is a body outside the back door or a mysterious object or note in a pocket of a jacket to be cleaned. She deals with inept or nosy employees, irritating customers, and the detectives investigating the murders that she has become involved in with equal determination and flair.
A real cozy, curl up with a cup of tea and read on. This was the first one of the Mandy Dyer mysteries that I read and I enjoyed it enough that I ordered another one from the series. Not a great mystery but a good plot, good characters and good writing made for a nice read.
