"No more complaints about the West - or you'll get a bucket of cold water on your head. That's the rule."

Ann's brothers take the rule seriously, but for Ann it is so hard not to complain, not to feel lonely. How she misses her friends back in Gettysburg! How long the days are here in the wilderness of Western Pennsylvania!

Then one exciting day a stranger rides up the hill. Ann shares a moment of history with a great American, and learns at last the true meaning of her cabin in the West.

This book surprised me with its sweetness and simplicity. So many books for young people are dark, the characters brooding, the storyline sad or violent. This is a simple story about a girl who is struggling to find contentment in her new home on the frontier. She is lonely, and misses her old home. Throughout the story she gradually realizes the blessings she has living in the west. I thought this was a very special litte book.
