Rachel Field writes an engaging story of colonial times that paints a clear picture of the challenges waiting for those who arrive in the new world. This book is hard to put down. Young readers will learn of the way of life for those who braved the wilderness and the Indians. This book is full of excitement and knowledge.

In 1743, thirteen-year-old Marguerite Ledoux travels to Maine as the indentured servant of a family that regards her as little better than the Indians that threaten them, but her strength, quick thinking and courage surprise them all.

A children's historical novel, about a French orphan who becomes a "bound-out" girl to a pioneer family in Northern Maine in 1743. Besides the hardships of being a servant in a harsh location where Indians and the weather are constant threats, Marguerite has to endure being called "Maggie," and conceal her Catholic religion from the staunchly anti-Papist community. A Newbery Honor winner. Reading level, 5th grade up.
