This is one of a series of five classic World War II novels. Basically it deals with German nationals who volunteered to spy for the Allies during the last months of the war in Europe, and their insertion into Germany behind German lines.

The hero is a German air force medical corporal, whose father resisted the Nazis. He is sent in to discover the location of two newly raised German divisions. The novel follows him for several days as he meets German civilians and soldiers in his search for the divisions and then in his attempt to return to Allied lines.

The corporal constantly confronts the morality of what he is doing to his countrymen and women. He uses some of his countrymen to fulfill his mission and at the same time endangers his life to help others.

The characters and story line are well developed and the book was made into the excellent movie "Decision Before Dawn."
