Phil Rickman writes in the horror genre, but his book are not overly graphic or gruesome. What they are is psychologically and emotionally impactful. Candle Night is an atmospheric story of murder in deepest Wales.

Creepy as all Phil Rickman is. A good exploration of the different worlds that we live in.

"Candlenight" is about a London couple on the fast track who decide to move to Wales. As hard as they try, the townspeople are cold to them. Then there's the lights flickering by the church. Whenever someone goes near them, they are no longer heard from. The church itself contains an ancient artifact that has the whole town affected in a negative way. The back cover states that "Phil Rickman is a brilliant master of sinister rural communities with dark secrets". That he is indeed.

For a young professional couple like Giles and Claire, the village was idyllic - a quant, peaceful place, far from the noise and crowds of the city. Though the locals could be standoffish at times, Giles and Claire did their best to participate in villge life. But their efforts to fit in seemed to lead nowhere. And the more they tried, the more unwelcoming the place became - until the very town itself seemed to rise up against their presence. Ancient secrets and dark superstitions took a hideous, living shape. And soon they learned the terrifying truth about what it meant to be outsiders...

Book was purchased from a library sale. Their sticker has been crossed out but date of discard is still on the back of the book. I just love library sales! Its a fairly good horror story.
