I loved this book! Although the story takes place in the 1800's, the language is so "Newfie" that it was kind of like a visit home, and since we aren't going this year, I am grateful to have read it. As with any story of early settlers in remote areas, there is plenty of hardship and tragedy, but the characters are wonderful! I look forward to finding out what comes next for them in the sequel- but I will wait until later in the summer when I really need another visit home.

A story of pioneering families in Newfoundland in the 1800s, written by a Newfoundlander. Against the sound of the waves and wheeling of seagulls, this amazing book deals with love, survival, faith, hope and the tough challenges of nature and human nature. An exceptional and thought-provoking book of what people can and will do to survive.

Set in England in the early 1800's, a lyrical tribute to the decency and kindness possible among people even in the most difficult circumstances.
