This is the first book in a historical adventure series by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It took awhile for me to get into it, but once I did I was disappointed when it ended. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series...Purity of Blood. I think this book would make a great movie!

Tale of a 16th century Spanish soldier told from the point of view of his young servant...historically very interesting and well-written. Very well translated, too!

In this first in a series, Spanish author Arturo Perez-Reverte tells the story of a 17th-century swordsman for hire whose life is in danger after his conscience prevents him from completing the assignment of killing a pair of travelers who turn out to be very important indeed.

I really liked this book! It was a quick read, but still very vividly writen. The author's love for Spain really shone through and the novel was peppered with a lot of Spain's Golden Age historical figures. I read one website that called it a "cerebral swashbuckler", and I think that's a very accurate description. I ended up getting the entire series!
