This is the first book in a historical adventure series by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It took awhile for me to get into it, but once I did I was disappointed when it ended. I'm looking forward to reading the next book in this series...Purity of Blood. I think this book would make a great movie!

Tale of a 16th century Spanish soldier told from the point of view of his young servant...historically very interesting and well-written. Very well translated, too!

In this first in a series, Spanish author Arturo Perez-Reverte tells the story of a 17th-century swordsman for hire whose life is in danger after his conscience prevents him from completing the assignment of killing a pair of travelers who turn out to be very important indeed.

Great-historical adventure with lots of interesting characters.

I really liked this book! It was a quick read, but still very vividly writen. The author's love for Spain really shone through and the novel was peppered with a lot of Spain's Golden Age historical figures. I read one website that called it a "cerebral swashbuckler", and I think that's a very accurate description. I ended up getting the entire series!

A much lighter touch than some of the novels by Perez-Reverte. I felt like I was reading the word bubbles from a good graphic novel--the word pictures were just fine for coloring in the pictures on the illustrated page.
"Swashbuckler: or swasher is a term that emerged in the 16th century and has been used for rough, noisy and boastful swordsmen ever since." Captain Alatriste, who swashes buckles with the best, is the strong, dark, silent, dangerous type; available for hire for those dirty, nasty bits of business that call for an ex-soldier's deft dirk, dagger, and sword. The Captain's crew of friends and enemies are drawn in colors just as exotic as the Captain. We know we are in for a delicious series of adventures, out of Marvel Comics, inked by Velasquez, told by Master story-teller, Senor Perez-Reverte. Ole!

Good swashbuckling action, told through the eyes of a teenage boy who is the page of a sword for hire in Golden Age Madrid.
