I enjoyed this book. While not quite as well-written as Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, (which would be VERY hard to do, since O'Brian has been called by some the best novelist of our time), it is still a very good read. One plus I found compared to O'Brian's work was that this book has more & clearer explanations of sailing terms and practices, for those not knowledgable. It also has the advantage of NOT being part of a long series, but is a freestanding novel! The main character's having to struggle against the prejudice against the Scottish during that period also adds interest.
