Book one of an eight book series about the Owl Gaurdians of GaHoole. Although fiction there is a great deal of information about different kinds of owls. The author has a great imagination! Suitable for Young Adult readers.

In true fantasy fashion, Lasky has spun a tale that is simple enough for young readers to grasp, yet intricate enough to not belittle them. As an adult, I found that there is plenty to keep me engaged, and I look forward to the next book. I think parents will approve of the message, as good morals are taught, friendship is rewarded, and respect for elders, traditions, and ingenuity win the day, or night, as the case is! Well written, carefully crafted, and exciting word usage helps with the flow of the tale. It seems obvious that she did a great deal of study of owls, and has inspired me to do so, as well! I am off to find out about "Elf Owls," so happy reading.

My 9 year old (at the time) and I read this book together for a homeschool book group we belonged to. It was wonderful. A very intriguing story line with lots of fascinating details about owls. It was one of the few books we found that was equally popular among boys, girls, and parents.

My granddaughter has yet to put this book down before she finished it. It is a wonderful series and lets kids believe in something and themselves when it comes to the "hard stuff."

This is the book that started it all, the first book of the Guardians of Ga'hoole; a quest novel, a growing-up novel, a mystery novel. Imaginative and intriguing, just right for YA reading. As an additional bonus, the author also displays considerable knowledge of actual owl habits and natural history.

From back cover: Soren is born in the forest of Tyto, a tranquil kingdom where the Barn Owls dwell. But evil lurks in the owl world, evil that threatens to shatter Tyto's peace and change the course of Soren's life forever.
Soren is captured and taken to a dark and forbidding canyon. It's called an orphanage, but Soren believes it's something far worse. He and his friend Gylfie know that the only way out is up. To escape, they will need to do something they have never done before--fly.
And so begins a magical journey. Along the way, Soren and Gylfie meet Twilight and Digger. The four owls band together to seek the truth and protect the owl world from unimaginable danger.

I read this book aloud to my three boys, ages 13, 11, and 10. They absolutely loved it and were chanting "another chapter, another chapter" almost every night. It was so easy to get caught up in Soren and Gylfie's struggles and we learned not only of their struggles, but we were also able to apply many lessons they learned to our own lives as we are struggling through some pretty big issues of our own.

Now we are reading the second book of the series aloud as well. We continue to love Soren and Gylfie, as well as Twilight and Digger. Great series of books!
