The authors of The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet (1993) and Healthy for Life (1995) aim the latest volume in their approach to carbohydrate addiction at maturing Americans. Professors at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, the Hellers reiterate their claims that excess insulin causes some people to crave carbohydrates, creating an unstoppable cycle of cravings and weight gain. Noting that metabolisms slow down as individuals age, the Hellers again tell personal stories of learning how to manage their carbohydrate intake and their weight. They present their Basic Plan, which is based on craving-reducing proteins and vegetables and allows "Reward Meals" that include reasonable portions of carbohydrates. Nine "Options" include such tactics as adding chromium, exercising, or cutting out MSG (which triggers carbo cravings). The Hellers also link excess insulin to such age-related diseases as high blood pressure, heart disease and adult-onset diabetes. Accompanying recipes and menus, which allow much more fat than typical low-fat/high-carb plans, may attract new readers. To maturing Heller fans, much of the text will seem familiar.

This is a great book for those of us who find it harder each passing year to lose weight and keep it off. When you eat a full breakfast and are hungry before lunch time. Get tired in the middle of the afternoon, become sluggish after a large meal, take insulin, female replacement hormones, or high blood pressure or cholestrol medication, or when you begin to eat starches, snack foods, or sweets, it is hard stop; then this book will help you! Wonderful recipes!!

My room mate was just diagnosed as a "borderline" diabetic, so I thought new food patterns might be in order. This book hit all the right places for BOTH of us! But, don't look for my copy - we need it here! Great book though!

First i must say that you dont need to be in your 40s or older for this book to work for you... Im only in my 20's and already starting to see that the carbs i eat are doing different things to my body (and not good things!!) than they did when I was in my teens and early twenties. The first half of the book is strait to the point and easy to understand diet advice as well as healthy living advice including self evaluation that not only tells you if you are or arent a carb addict (which im sure you already know if you are reading the book to begin with) the self evaluation digs deeper to classify the severity of your carb addiction and then gets to the bottom of the cause and results of your addiction and what to do about it (ie: why you are craving what you do, and what the carbs you eat are doing to you and how to reverse the whole cycle). The other half of the book consists of a progress chart, daily meal plans and recipes, which I liked because many diet books tell you what you need to do and eat but not how to prepare the foods you are supposed to be eating. (so you end up either giving up on the diet completly, or buying some crappy tasting diet food, or trying to make something that should be healthy but it really isnt because you are using the wrong ingredients etc) In whole, the diet is pretty easy to stick to because the recipes are tasty and pretty easy to make thus making it easy to integrate into your daily life.
