Now a widow, Rachel Maitland is on her way to Carson City to marry a miner. However, when she arrives, U.S. Marshal Joshua Egan tells Rachel that her intended husband left town because he decided he didn't want to marry. However, the marshall is willing to marry her because he has four children, and his wife was killed five months before. She died in a stagecoach robbery that went bad. Joshua plans to go after the robbers as soon as his homelife stabilizes.

Rachel doesn't hesitate to marry a man with four children; she's wanted children, but after nine years, she is barren. Three of the children accept her immediately, but Maggie resists because she likes being the little mother.
