Continuation of the series that started with Cast In Shadow. There is a mystery surrounding Kaylin in that she has strange tattoos on her arms and she has unknown power. In this book she is told to study magic by her commander but Kaylin is a stubborn pupil. Meanwhile something is going on in the Barrani court - the Lord of the West Court is dying because someone has his name, and Kaylin gets involved. Really well written like all of Sagara's works. I particularly enjoyed the politics and descriptions of how magic worked from Kaylins point of view. Also Kaylin is considered ignorant of certain customs in that world - and I'm just as clueless as she is, so the reader learns as she does about the Barrani court. Its really fascinating how intricately Michelle Sagara created this world.

Court intrigue and ancient magic stir up old ghosts as well as deadly mystery in Sagara's engaging second fantasy novel (after Cast in Shadow). As a Hawk serving the Halls of Law in Imperial capital Elantra, Kaylin Neya wishes she could ignore her strange tattoosespecially the glyph on her cheek, a Barrani rune loosely translated as "Consort," placed there by the lord of her former fief, outcaste Barrani Lord Nightshade. Those glyphs and their wild magic have gotten her into trouble beforeenough that both the Lord of Hawks and the Imperial Order of Mages demand she learn to control her growing magical talent or be kicked out of the Hawks. Before this news can sink in, however, Kaylin is dragged into a dangerous plot after she heals the younger son of the Barrani Lord of the High Court. Kaylin thus earns the Lord's gratitude, but she also becomes a target for those who would bring down the High Court itself.

This is book two of the series Sagara started with 'Cast in Shadow.' In many ways it's a stronger book. Kaylin is forced to deal with her history with Severn--and Sagara pulls off their interactions in an authentic way. There are battles and blood, but at heart this is a novel about relationships--human-alien, and the always tricky human-human. A strong, engaging read.

Michelle Sagara is one of my favorite LUNA writers--and this is a great sequel to Cast in Shadow. Excellent work!
Just as good as the first one, maybe even better. Can't wait for the third!!

I believe that this book is better than the first. The store flowed a little more easily and had more quick moving action and a few of the characters where better explained. (Ones that had been two dimensional in the previous book.) Overall I liked both books but this one is my preference.

Oh, I really liked this book! I thought that the plot was strong, though perhaps not as strong as _Cast in Shadow_. I admit that Sagara's writing style does take some getting used to, but once you are accustomed to it, it's very entertaining and certainly unique! Though each book has a self contained plot, for the over-arching character plots, I am starting to feel like I am rooting for her further involvement with a villain... I am certainly the most intrigued by Nightshade. I can't wait to read the next books and see more about where this series is going!
I enjoyed this book immensely.
