This book by Lilian Jackson Braun is interesting and light and contains just
enough humor to entertain while leading the reader through a mystery that cannot be
solved until the last few pages! Reporter James Qwilleran investigates another crime with the aid of his Siamese cats. Unfortunate accidents seem to be happening in this one!

A visit to Breakfast Island for Qwill and the cats is anything but a vacation. Accidents start occuring and a suspicious fatal boating accident have Qwill and company sticking their noses in (or should I say whiskers??)

Commercial development on the once peaceful Grand Island has the taciturn locals upset. When a cabin cruiser explodes, killing its owner, Qwilleran suspects sabotage and decides to investigate.

I read all the books in this light-hearted series one after another and really enjoyed them. The cat KoKo and his feline partner, Yum Yum, are endearing. Their owner is a former newspaper reporter, James Qwilleran. They live in a small town with lots of interesting residents. James can't seem to avoid murders though he sure would like to. The series ended abruptly with unresolved relationships due to the author's death at 97.

You don't have to like cats to enjoy this book. These cat mystery books are the best.

This is one of the earlier Cat Who books. It was very enjoyable.

The 'breakfast' in the title refers to the name of an island where Qwill and the Siamese go for vacation ... while Polly vacations in Oregon. Besides Scrabble, Koko can now play Dominoes as well ... and picked out numbers that correspond to letters in the alphabet ... to spell out clues to the murders happening on the island. The only puzzling part in the book was the northern hurricane. I have never heard of a hurricane happening in any of the Great Lakes region, where I've lived most of my life. Other than that, this book was another enjoyable mystery with Koko and Yum Yum.

From Publishers Weekly
In the 16th Cat Who . . . adventure, Pickax City's Jim Qwilleran and his intuitive Siamese cats, Yum Yum and Koko, investigate odd accidents plaguing a glitzy resort recently built on a nearby island in Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." As Breakfast Island undergoes development which highlights its possible pirate past, retired reporter Qwill and others bemoan the spoiling of its natural beauty. After an episode of food poisoning and an accidental drowning at the resort hotel, the owners of the Domino Inn, an already established bed-and-breakfast, ask Qwill to find out whether disgruntled locals are trying to discourage tourism. On the day that Qwill moves himself and the cats into one of the Inn's cottages, another guest is injured on the Inn's front steps and an explosion in the resort's marina kills a yacht owner. Questioning reticent natives and resort employees, Qwill enlists an informant to speak with witnesses of the accidents. He himself talks with the vague proprietor of a resort antique shop filled with overpriced items. But it is Yum Yum's domino playing that sets the former newsman on the right track. Braun ( The Cat Who Went into the Closet ) gives fans what they crave in this latest meandering tale about the skeptical, lovable Qwill on an island full of cats.
