This was more like reading A History of...rather than like reading a mystery. Our hero is indirectly involved in everything and directly involved in nothing so the mystery parts are explained close to the end and as the reader I was left with a vague sense that it had all happened while I wasn't looking.
The towns and their massive cast of characters are so richly detailed I felt like I could move there and call people by their first names.

It's a Lillian Jackson Braun "Cat Who..." book. What more needs to be said? (Well, it might be worth saying that this one was one of the good ones, written before she got so old that the last few books have been ... not up to par, let us say.)
This time Qwill, Koko and Yum Yum take a vacation to the Nutcracker Inn.

I read all the books in this light-hearted series one after another and really enjoyed them. The cat KoKo and his feline partner, Yum Yum, are endearing. Their owner is a former newspaper reporter, James Qwilleran. They live in a small town with lots of interesting residents. James can't seem to avoid murders though he sure would like to. The series ended abruptly with unresolved relationships due to the author's death at 97.

I didn't make it much farther than page 50 on this one. I need to remind myself to NOT read a Cat Who book more frequently than once every six months or so; they all start to sound alike.
This one seemed to suffer from left-hand-right-hand editing. In the first 50 pages I lost count of the non sequiturs. Or maybe I just wasn't reading enough into the written situations to make the leap?
Either way, occasionally and in small doses I really enjoy these books. This one was particularly jarring, and I didn't even stick around to find out whodunit or whom it was dun to.

Staying in an Inn isn't quite what the Siamese Casts like but Koko manages to entertain himself with squirrels and dead bodys floating downstream.

Another 'Cat Who' book---Great fun with prize-winning journalist Jim Qwilleran and his extraordinary cats! Qwilleran is enjoying his stay at the Nutcracker Inn in Black Creek. His two Siamese, Koko and Yum Yum, don't seem quite as pleased with the accommodations, though Koko does enjoy keeping a keen eye on the squirrels and other local wildlife. Then, while Koko's eagerly watching some jumping trout, he spots something else; a body, floating downstream. When it is revealed that the victim was a guest at the same inn where the journalist is staying (and had nuggets of gold hidden in his shoes) Qwill dives into the case.
it was ok
Another fun and well-written book by Lilian Jackson Braun. I enjoyed the book and it was a quick read.
