I really enjoyed this book. The rating before I added mine was 1 star --so I almost just passed it up. Decided to give it 50 pages.....at page 178, I realized I forgot about just giving it 50 pages.
The story is about a couple families in the late 1800-early 1900's in North Carolina mountains. It read kind of like a book on local history - telling stories about the local people and the area. I kept picturing my great-greats while I was reading it!
Read it - you won't be dissappointed!

Well written book about the backwoods people in North Carolina. However, I wanted more information on most of the characters. There was too much jumping around, and too many characters whose stories were undeveloped. A pleasant read nonetheless and if you're from the region I think you'll really like it, as it does not make fun of these peoples but gives credence to their views and way of life. Nonetheless, I would still call it a born classic and a masterful debut for a new author.
