I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was rich with history, which I enjoyed. However, I didn't really get to fall in love with the characters and I really wanted to. I didn't even get to know the characters all too well. However, there's a sequel to the book, "Taking Liberties," and I will read that as I am interested enough into finding out what happens during the next stage of Makepence's life.

Interesting book, well written. A good read. I enjoyed it!

I really thought I would like this book more than I did. I generally like books set in this time period, and I really enjoyed Mistress of the Art of Death. But I just did not feel very connected to the characters in this book. I think I lost interest when Makepeace's fortunes changed in England (I don't want to be more specific than that--I don't want to put a spoiler in the review). I had a really hard time keeping interest in the storyline after that point.

Great read! Terrible title. I almost didn't read it 'cause I thought it was a historical romance. Very well researched and well written. Norman has written many books, most of which have a historical theme. I can hardly wait to get to them!
