I read this book after Hunting Midnight, which is the 2nd in the series. This story centers around Gillian, who is mentioned quite often in the 2nd book, so I enjoyed finding out more about her, though I wish Id read this one first as you also find out a bit more history about some of the other major characters.
Gillian comes to the pack as a young girl of 10 years old, whose mother and brother are in the death grips of the plague sweeping the country. She is adopted by the upyr pack and grows to become a strong upyr, partially because she had the some natural gifts, such as the gift of sight, to begin with. Unfortunately, Gillian feels unfulfilled and eventually leaves the cave and protection of the upyr to explore the human world. As a shapeshifter, she finds her familiar in a falcon, but is then captured by a kind falconer named Aimery Fitz Clare whom she eventually falls in love with.
Like bookrabbit, who lent me Hunting Midnight, I think I liked that one a little bit better than this one though not by much. And though the 2nd book expanded on some of the history of the characters, there was certainly enough information given about the major characters in that book (with the exception of Gillian since she was part of that book in word only) so that you didnt feel lost if you started the series there.

An excellent paranormal book where the culture of the werewolf meets the culture of the humans. Go on an adventure with Gillian, once an orphan child, now taken in by the shape-shifting immortals. She loves her people but also longs for the world beyond the forest and caves. She escapes one day only to be caught by Aimery Fitz Clare who has no idea what he's caught. Can love conquer the limits of the imagination and sooth the savage beasts? Only one way to find out...read the book!

Catching Midnight is a powerfully seductive romance. The raw emotions and the sizzling sex are skillfully woven into a very tender and touching love story. Numerous secondary characters are intertwined within to give you a thrilling page-turner of treacherous betrayals, envy, greed and mentally unbalanced obsessions. The paranormal world of upyr's was a new realm of which I had no prior knowledge, thatI found extremely interesting. I really liked this book and I most definitely recommend it - the pages flew and the sensuality will make your toes curl!

I enjoyed the story of this book, I did not enjoy how much sex was put into the book. I also did not like how Ulric acted in the end. It didn't seem to fit into his character. Actually to be honest the entire end was a bit hollow for me. It was almost as if the author knew what ending she wanted and didn't bother to write the path to it overly well.
I did like the magic in the story and Gillian's internal battle to do what is right and remember the human aspect of life. I liked her relationship with the bird, Princess. Aimery's character was also Very likable and you wanted to cheer for him.

Supernatural romance. Not typical Emma Holly. Less partners. Less love scenes and little clinical. More romance. More intrigue and secondary character development. Good start to a series I plan to contimue.

Definately a different type of vampire here or rather Upyr...the story carries you along and the discriptive writing is very good...toss in the odd steamy love scene and all you need is a nice glass of wine or hot cup of tea and your ready for a night of adventure

Gillian was orphaned by the plague at the age of 10 in the year 1349. She is found in the woods by two Upyr elders. Both offer to convert her, so she must choose if she wants to be converted to Upyr and by whom. After she makes her choice, she goes to live with a pack of Upyr shapeshifters. She becomes dissatisfied with her life and seeks to leave the pack to explore the world. She takes on the shape of a falcon - and is promptly captured by Aimery Fitz Clare, the mortal second son of a powerful lord. He takes her in and trains her for the hunt not realizing her true nature. Since this is a romance, you know they fall in love ... but even with the predictability, I still enjoyed it.

This was a good book, it was well written and compelled me to keep reading to get to the end.
This is an excellent contribution to the Vampire Romance genre. Emma Holly delivers a unique and interesting take on the vampire story and includes the sensual heat we've come to expect from this author. She gives us vampires who can transform into animals so you get the shapeshifter and vampire genre all rolled into one delicious book.

loved this book along with hunting midnight
I love this author! This was my second book I've read by Holly and I can honestly say that although the books were very different, I truly enjoyed them both. Erotic, romantic, and forbidden love is everyone's desire. You get plenty of it in Catching Midnight. A world of enchantment, mystery and excitement with a good dose of lust and eventual love is created before the readers' eyes! A must read!
