The first book in the "Charlotte and Thomas Pitt" series is a real winner. It's a penetrating social critique disguised as a murder mystery. The book explores how families are torn apart by doubt and suspicion after a series of murders occurs in their fashionable neighborhood.

A series of horrible murders folds back the veneer of a Victorian household. A remarkable book for its approach: not so much a building of suspense, but a revelation of character rather than action, an exploration of class differences and manners. Gripping, surprising and convincing. I love the Victorian era and thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I did not like this book at first. I hated Charlotte's family especially her father, Edward, and her grandmother. Both of them really got on my last nerve.

About halfway through the book I really started to enjoy it. I keep flip-flopping in my head as to who the killer was. One chapter I would think it was Mrs. Prebble and the next I would think it was Mr. Prebble. Finally about 3/4 of the way through I figured it out.

I will give it 3 stars and thank God I don't work for a preacher like Mr. Prebble.

This is a victorian mystery. It's about a family in England that has three grown daughters. They are an upper class family. They are shaken when vicious murders start taking place in their neighborhood. I thought the book was very interesting, especially in how things have changed since then.

A very interesting novel in a somewhat depressing Victorian setting. Women are to be seen and not heard and certainly not express their true feelings. And heavens forbid if you are a member of the lower classes, such as servants or criminals. People such as these do not really have any feelings.

Aside from all that, I began to suspect in the middle of the book just who the killer might be. Initially, I felt it was one of two people, then one of those people began to outpace the other in my suspicions. So the surprising ending wasn't so surprising. Hopefully, as the author intended, it will be a surprise to you.

Upper class Charlotte Ellison and her family meet Thomas Pitt when a series of brutal stranglings finds their way to their doorstep. We see how the police were treated and we are introduced to the mores of the times. I became a fan of the victorian mystery reading this series.

If you are thinking about reading this series, please take my advise and do it! I have been reading these one after another and each one is better than the previous! I've been wondering where Anne Perry has been and why I am only now finding her wonderful books! If you like historical mysteries with intelligent characters and page-turning suspense, you will love this series. I am very happy that there are so many of them. I am set up for good reading for weeks on end.

I really liked the characters. They are not complicated characters, but they are interesting. I want to know what happens next. The mystery is solved and there are enough clues to give you an idea of its solution. The author leaves you guessing about the H/H, but you know what is going to happen because the name of the series is on the book. This is the first one and obviously other people like them...there are now 29 of them. Quick Read! Recommend!

"An ingenious mystery and an excellent example of manners and caste systems of the Victorian era."
THE CHATTANOOGA TIMES
While the Ellison girls were out paying calls and drinking tea like proper Victorian ladies, a maid in their household was strangled to death. The quiet and young Inspector Pitt investigates the scene and finds no one above suspicion. As his intense questioning causes many a composed facade to crumble, Pitt finds himself couriously drawn to pretty Charlotte Ellison. Yet, a romance between a society girl and so unsuitable a suitor was impossible in the midst of a murder....

How Charlotte and Thomas met and the rest is history. A series of strangled women in the "better" part of the city drew our clever couple together. The first engaging and unexpected book of a wonderful series.

In this book we are introduced to Charlotte Ellison, her family and Thomas Pitt. Young women are being strangled and one of the killings brings the horror to the doorstep of the Ellison family. We see the rigid rules of conduct that separate "the classes" and how the police are viewed. I was never a fan of "historical mysteries", but this book made me change my mind.....I really enjoyed learning of the mores of the time as well as being treated to an excellent mystery....
