The story of two young boys that grow together, one the son of the master, the other the son of one of his workers. They grow up during the time of the Inquisition and the twists of life places them face to face as adults, one accussed of loving a forbidden woman, the other as the Inquisitor.

This was a great book! You are taken to Medieval Spain during the time of the Inquisition. It is like watching an epic movie of the life of a man from his infancy, childhood and manhood: his trials, his coming of age, his passion, successes and loves are told against the backdrop of the times. Great attention to detail takes you there - how the people lived, what they wore and ate, their loves and hatreds and loyalties, the social and political structure of the times. Arnau is a good, honest man who is generous with his hard won wealth, but makes enemies as well. The back cover states: "A new Ken Follett is born", this is "a thrilling historical novel of friendship and revenge, plague and hope, love and war." A very rich and satisfying read! Savor it!

ETA: Read the author's notes at the back of the book. The novel is based on real people and real events in ancient writings. No wonder it is so powerful and alive!

I loved this book...twice! Full of Spanish medieval history, yet a compelling, emotional story in spite of this.

Absolutely my favorite read of all times! This is a heavy book. The author pulls you in on the first page and never lets go. It's been months since I've read this and I think of the characters on a daily basis. I will read this one over and over.

I found this an excellent read. I will have to try more of Falcones work.
