Every once and a while I get the desire to re-read a book I enjoy in Junior High. 9 times out of ten, I can't believe I even remembered the book let alone remembered liking it. The Catswold portal (besides not remembering the title or the author) is as wonderful a story as I remembered.
The story takes place in Northern California in 1957 and in a magical underground world. This underground world is under the rule of an evil queen that using lies as a weapon is taking over the world, one nation at a time. (An example, she streads a lie that the king of a nation is selling children into slavery) results revolution and she takes over another nation. Reviews note: This book was published in 1992, before push polls like, "Whould you still love for McCain if you knew he had a black child out of wedlock".
Mellissa doesn't know about the upper world, and she doesn't know much about who she is. She is kept ignorant of her past, and so is the reader. The author doesn't give too much information away that the chareters themselves don't know.
The good news is good triemphs over evil and in the end that is all that really matters.

From the author of the Joe Gray mysteries, about those talking cat detectives. More intense storyline. Takes place in both our part of Earth and the Netherworld, under out feet. In order to complete her malevolent plan, evil Sorcerss Queen Siddonie wants the human Melissa. In order to cope Melissa goes in both her woman form and her cat form.

Read like a female/feline version of "Lord of the Rings". Was her transition from children's book to adult books. A good foundation to start her "Joe Gray mystery series" that I dearly love!

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did, but it is a neat mix of fantasy and suspense, overall very good!!
If your world is ruled by the cats in your heart and home, this book is a must read. There are parts that get slightly sluggish, but only because I wanted the story of the other side of the portal more than I related to the moping widower who doesn't redeem himself until the end.
While it's more solemn that I would have liked, it had a good plot and a happy ending.

Cat's are people too! Don't you wonder what your cat is thinking? They are sometimes too human. Great fantasy...
Wonderful fantasy story!
It was slow starting, but once you get into it it is amazing. I got so caught up the the Catsworld-all my cares and stressors disappeared into the Portal
At the bottom artist Barden West's California Garden is a door of rich dark wood carved with the tree beatiful cats. On the other side of this magic portal lies the Neither World -a whelm of shape shifting Catsworld, of human rebels and their cruel enslaver. All that Siddonie needs to complete her evil plan is to find Melissa, who was once queen of the Faerie before she was spirited away with at the cost of her childhool memories. Now Melissa back.
