Another very good Erica Spindler story. A young woman gives her baby to an infertile couple and insinuates herself into their lives. It may sound familiar, but the story is different with a twist.

Erica Spindler writes tremendous intrigue. The ingenue in each novel is a young to mid-thirties woman facing a known or unknown crisis... personal and career wise, usually...if you like great suspense/murder mystery novels, you will love Erica Spindler. The characters are all well developed, and you will find yourself wishing that the novel wouldn't end.

They have a perfect marriage, but cannot have a child. The adoption agency's call fulfills that dream, and opens the door to a nightmare.

Spindler's latest romantic suspense (after Shocking Pink) moves fast and takes no prisoners. Kate and Richard Ryan, the perfect couple (money, good looks, successful power careers, great house on Lake Pontchartrain), adopt a baby girl to make their lives complete. Unbeknownst to them, the birth mother, Julianna, a young woman on the run from her ex-lover, CIA contract-killer John Powers, is more than a tad unhinged. Unable to tear herself from the beautiful lives of the Ryans, Julianna falls for Richard and becomes his mistress. Meanwhile, baby Emma fulfills Kate's life in a way material success never could. But Powers is closing in on all of them, vowing bloody revenge, and Kate finds herself turning to old boyfriend Luke Dallas, bestselling author of detective stories, for aid and comfort. Though marred by an occasionally clunky prose style, Spindler's newest is an intriguing look into the twisted mind of someone for whom murder is simply a business.

A young woman is pregnant and on the run from the baby's father (she has learned that he is a killer for hire). She leaves wealth and privilege behind for the seedy side of New Orleans. She plans to give her baby up for adoption. While choosing a couple to adopt the baby, she becomes obsessed with the husband, and begins to emulate the wife, trying to destroy the marriage.

This book is very reminiscent of the movie "The Hand that Rocks the Cradle": obsessed young woman, beautiful young family, scary stalker element. This book adds a little more to the mix though, including the CIA, a hit man, a well-known novelist, and murder. A good story, but a little predictable. Not Spindler's best work, but satisfying nonetheless.
