I have never watched Cesar Millan's television show, but my petsitter talks about him a lot so I was curious about this book.
This book is a fun read for dog lovers, especially the early chapters in which the author describes his life and how he came to be the famed dog trainer that he is today. It is also fun to read about the celebrities he has worked with (Oprah, Jada Pinkett Smith) and how their dogs walk all over them.
However, do not choose this book if you are looking for detailed advice about dog training or correcting problem behavior. Although the title may imply otherwise, all the solutions here are very vague and generally fall into one of the following categories: you (the pack leader) need to work on "calm-assertive energy," you need to take your dog for a half hour walk, or you (still) need to work on "calm-assertive energy" so that your dog will have "calm-submissive energy." Unfortunately, Millan doesn't really tell the reader HOW to obtain that kind of energy, other than perhaps by emulating Oprah.
Although the stories of dogs rehabilitated by the author are heartwarming, ultimately the novelty wears thin because not much insight is given into how the dogs' behaviors are turned around (other than by the author's "calm-assertive energy.") This book would have been much more interesting had the author spoken more specifically about fewer cases, or made the book shorter.

He has a gift and lots of good points. I do believe him when he says we make our pets neurotic by not recognizing their true nature. It's a definite must-read for any dog lovers/dog-owners. Aside from his advice, Millan has really made a life for himself - - a great story of what you can accomplish when you have goals and go for it.

This was a very insightful book, and it was interesting to read about Cesar's progression to hosting the National Geographic Channel's "Dog Whisperer". Cesar makes some very good suggestions on working with dogs, and he is very knowledgable about how dogs act in packs. It is a good read for someone who is looking to better understand their dog's behavior(s); however, it does not replace working with an experienced and qualified trainer and/or dog behavioralist.

Caesar's formula for a contented and balanced dog seems impossibly simple: exercise, discipline and affection, in that order -He is the star of National Geo's channel hit "Dog Whispherer with Caesar Millan" and has trained many difficult dogs, including Oprah's, that others have given up on .

I feel ripped off & mislead by the book description. I just wanted a simple step-by-step book that would help me solve some typical issues with my dogs. I'm about 70 pages in and so far this book is a story about Cesar's life, not a "guide" to correcting common dog problems. And while I understand that daily exercise is important for dogs (which is all I've learned so far), most people don't live in CA climate/have hours per day to exercise their dogs. Give me something I can use. A frustrating waste of time.

We got this book when we were first thinking of adding a dog to our family. I absolutely love this book! We learned how to relate and bond with our dog better than I ever did with our family dogs growing up. This is not a book on how to train your dog to sit, come, stay, etc. But it's a great tool to have a great relationship with your dog that he can understand.

I bought this book after enjoying the Dog Whisperer show, and thinking I'd get some tips to help with my dog...I unfortunately found very little useful information in it. At least the first 1/3 of the book was a introduction to Cesar and how he ended up where he is now (growing up, his early life, etc). It was interesting, but not what I bought the book for. I would say, the amount of useful information I obtained from the book, probably could have fit on maybe 10 pages...a real disappointment.

WOW!!! A real "reality check" for us humans! Some information is hard to swallow, but as Cesar explains, this is how real dog packs and wolf packs act. It definatly explains his contreversial methods to people who are new to his work. Also, a few short chapters summarize his remarkable life. Although his training methods are thoroughly described this is NOT a training book! There are no descriptions of how to get your dog to "sit" or "rollover'. Have an open mind before you read this book, it can drastically enlighten, but also shock you to the reality of your dog's behavior. The advice is phenomenal and I recomend it to novice trainers and professionals alike.

I've watched Cesar's dog show off and on for many years, and although this book doesn't add much, it was still an entertaining read. I agree with many reviewers that the actual training sections boil down to a few pages, but explaining some of the dog psychology, and getting more information on some of the dogs on his shows was very interesting. I think I get the basic ideas behind his methods, and can pick and choose what is applicable to my situation. If you like Cesar's dog show, and just want more information about dog behavior, pack psychology, how to set those "rules, boundaries and limitations" etc, then this is a good read. If you are looking for specific tips on dog training, then you should skip this book.

I have just started ready Cesar's Way, I LOVE IT!!!
I have a maltese, that we got at 4 months old. 'She is our baby!' Thats a phrase in the book. Although we love her sooo much, she didn't know how to be a dog. Now she knows, what to do when I open the door, and so many other commands. I also have another maltese. We got her when she was about 5 or 6. She is scared of everyone and everything. She comes to me, but after a year and half, she hasn't progressed much.
My youngest daughter is developementaly delayed with speech problems. We have taught them hand signals for sit, come, stay.
My family has watched Cesar for a couple of years now, but since I've gotten the book, I've been working with my babies more, but the correct way.
Thank you Cesar!!!

I love Cesar and we watch his show a lot. My little chihuahua Carlie is probably related to NuNu somehow, ha! However, if you watch the show regularly, you might be a little bit disappointed in the book. It really is more the story of how he came to be the dog whisperer and a recap of certain problem cases (some I remember) and I was really looking specific instruction for specific problems. We are seriously considering asking him to come here and help! We are warn out trying to get her to get her stay calm submissive. Anyway, Cesar is great, the book is great, but if you watch the show with any regularity, it might be just repetitive for you. I still give it high marks.

Excellent information and provocative thoughts about animal behavior and psychology. Easy and fun read. I found it interesting to learn about Cesar's career and how he has studied animals through personal observation and reading books written by those who are animal experts and veterinarians. I learned Cesar is truly gifted and very intelligent and committed to 1) learning the most he can and 2) being the best he can be. He is not just a TV star with a gift. And so, I appreciate his thoughts and information and suggestions.

Obviously written by someone other than Cesar Millan, it is a telling of his life story with reference to some of his "dog psychology" philosophies. I marked it 3 stars (like it) rather than 2 stars because there is no 2.5 stars. his book put me to sleep on many occasions. It is slow, plodding, and over long. The "dog" part could be condensed to a pamphlet.
