From the book cover: "Sweeping from the blood-soaked castles of medieval Wales to the landmark expedition of Lewis and Clark, from the hushed beauty of virgin wilderness to Mandan villages of domed earthen lodges, THE CHILDREN OF FIRST MAN is a triumph of the storyteller's art. With its beautifully written and deeply felt descriptions of the feelings the first white settlers and Native Americans had for each other, THE CHILDREN OF FIRST MAN tells the fascinating story of a European people gradually absorbed into the Amerindian culture until their literacy was lost and their Christian religion submerged in the legend of a Welsh Price named Madoc, the First Man."
Tells the story of the European people who get absorbed into the culture of the Amerindian tribes in the late 1100s. Their literacy and religion becomes lost and mingled with the legend of a Welsh prince, Madoc, who is called the First Man.
Always an interest in American Indians and Lewis and Clark. Great book.
a disappointment from an author I usually enjoy thoroughly
Tis the second time for reading this book. May even read it again. I feel like it sheds a lot of light on life for the native Americans before the 1500's A very worthwhile read for me. Michael L. Mullins
James Alexander Thom has become my new favorite writer, and this my favorite book. A fictional story based on a "myth" that there was a group of Welsh, lead by a Welsh cheiftan, Madoc, who came to America long before Columbus, and eventually blended with the American Indians to become the Mandan tribe. Thom is a "masterful storyteller" who thoroughly researches all available information about the Welsh tribe, indian spiritual and religious rites and beliefs, and combines them into an incredible story. I was completely entranced and learned sooo much about native american life. Lewis and Clark befriended this tribe and a famous artist Catlin captures the beauty and dignity of these peoples in his wonderful paintings. The comparison/similarity of the Amerindian beliefs with Christian beliefs are fascinating. READ IT!
I love this book and I am an avid reader of everything that this author has written in his writing career.
This was a great read.
