Interesting, written in the 40's, has a different written style than "we are used to" (We, being readers of quality fiction).
It's the story of the writer and of the place in Italy: Lucania, a forgotten and poverty filled area forgotten by geography and history, where he is banished for being anti-fascist.

An eloquent account of Levi's life as a political exile in 1930's Lucania, a remote region in southern Italy.

I read this book many years ago and really enjoyed it. I thought it was a true nonfiction account of Levi's experiences. I was surprised to learn recently that the book is actually fiction. not true at all.
