The description of this book sounds rather grim, but in fact many parts of the book are really humorous, and the writing is delightful. I loved it. Some have compared this author to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but I wouldn't call it magical realism. It's about true historical events but they become fantastical when seen through the eyes of a child.
